COMPLETION PRODUCTS INSTALLTION GUIDELINES
Section 1 – Sub-Assemblies
On arrival at Installation Completion specialist should check with Company representative and
discuss forthcoming operations. (Safety Induction etc, may be required by Company first).
If equipment is onboard a check should be made as soon as possible to ensure nothing is missing
or damaged. Any discrepancies should be notified to Company representative and action taken to
remedy situation.
All sub-assemblies should be laid out and checked as follows:
1. Threads Box and Pin checked for damage
2. Drifted with correct drifts
3. Strapped, total length and each component length. (Lengths should concur with Completion
Assembly Report or Customers equivalent).
4. All outside diameters should be measured and recorded.
5. All nipple s should have appropriate plugs set in and pulled from them. The plugs should
also be run through any sub-assembly that is to be run above their corresponding nipple.
6. Packer and travel joints etc, all shear pins checked for quantity, strength and condition.
7. All serial numbers and part numbers should be recorded and packers weight range checked.
8. Ensure all sub-assemblies are numbered for correct running order.
9. Function Test DHSV as Company requirements. Wireline retrievable DHSV should have
dummy installed and tested.
10. Any Gas Lift Mandrels that are to be run should be checked for correct running order.

Section 2 – Other Equipment
1. Ensure there are enough control line protectors of the right type onboard, also ensure they fit
the tubing and clean the casing.
2. Ensure enough control line length is available for DHSV depth.
3. Test control line to required pressure.
4. Ensure control line fitting are of the same material as the control line (this eliminates danger
of galvanic corrosion).
5. Check tubing:
Grade
Weight
Thread
Number of Joints
Record number of pup joints and lengths
6. If a Wireline set packer is to be run, ensure adapter sub is compatible with both packer and
setting tool.
7. If using a Wireline packer, but setting it with a hydraulic setting tool, check compatibility with
packer and running string.
Check ball size (ensure it can reach tool and hold pressure).

Section 3 – Calculations
The following calculations should also be carried out.
Packer Set on Wireline
Calculate force require to set packer. Number of pins x rating = lbs force
Ensure total force required is less than tool output
Ensure correct quantity of oil is used for maximum BHT
Check length from centre of packer elements to CCL (for space out)
Wireline Packer set with Hydraulic Setting Tool
Number of pins x rating
a) Calculate start to set pressure = Piston area of setting tool = PSI
Number of pins x rating
b) Calculate pressure to shear ball catcher sub = Piston area of ball catch sub = PSI
Ensure that pressure calculated at B is greater than pressure calculated at A.
Hydraulic Set Packer
Number of pins x rating
a) Calculate start to pressure = Piston area = PSI
b) Calculate force to shear PBR. Number of pins x rating = lbs force
c) Calculate force acting on PBR at start to set pressure of packer = .7854 x D2 x start to set
pressure = lbs force
• PBR ID for Hanger Free to move.
• Difference in X-Sect. Area of Tubing ID to PBR ID for Hanger Tied Down.
N.B. Force C should be less than force B.
d) Calculate force to shear packer release screws (retrievable and permanent retrievable packers)
= number of screws x rating = lb force
Ensure this force plus weight of tubing is well within yield strength of tubing being run (to ensure
packer releases before tubing parts).
General
Pipe displacement calculations should also be carried out to ensure specialist is aware of fluid
quantities to be added to the hole when pulling tubing and displacement quantities when running
tubing. (Check against swabbing and well kicks).

Section 4 – Running List and Pipe Tally
After original meeting with Company representative the specialist would either be supplied with a
running list of pipe tally or have been asked to carry out that task. Whatever system the list and tally
should be checked by several people to verify calculations.
A well schematic should also be drawn without the final depths. (Those are confirmed at finish
when hanger is landed).
When all parties are in agreement and completions is about to be run a tool box meeting should be
held so that all concerned know what is required and expected of them.
The Completion should now be run according to the Companies procedures and practices.
When running packer on drill pipe or tubing, great care must be taken when passing packer through
drill floor and B.O.P. stack. When packer assembly has reached the fluid level running speed may
be increased as conditions allow. A reasonable guide for running speed is to keep 95% of hang
weight when running in well; again care should be taken when approaching a potential trouble spot
such as a liner top, old perforations, dogleg, etc.

Section 5 – Hints on Space Out and Tally
Packer depth is usually taken from MID-ELEMENT. To correlate tally from a wireline set packer,
distance from mid-element to no-go on straight slot, J-slot or ratch-latch of tubing is required.
There will always be a discrepancy between wireline depth and tubing depth due to various
reasons, thermal expansion, elongation due to tensile load on tubing, etc. This difference + or – ft
should be noted at foot of schematic and can be “lost” where there is the greatest length of tubing.
The running list is used mainly as a guide to ensure the sub assemblies are installed at the correct
depth. If depth is critical e.g. gas lift mandrels, pup joints should be installed for accurate
positioning. When running gas lift mandrels it must be remembered that their depth has to be true
vertical depth, as the valves are operated by hydrostatic pressure which is calculated using T.V.D.
(correlations need to be carried out to give measured depths).

When the tubing has reached packer depth the final space out takes place and the method used will
depend on whether the completion was:
a) A single trip completion, i.e. packer and tubing run together
b) Packer set first and tubing then run in hole
Packer is run to depth and checked with a C.C.L. or similar.
Space out is then commenced or packer set then space out commenced, this depending on several
parameters.
Generally 3 or 4 joints before tubing is due to land (ref. running sheet) the circulating head is
connected and slow pumping commenced while running in hole.
The completion is run in hole until a pressure increase is encountered, the pumps should be
stopped immediately, and the pressure build up should be accompanied by a weight loss. (Weight
loss without pressure increase indicates no entry into packer).
The space out can now be made on the rig floor by measuring the pipe in until weight begins to drop
off rapidly, check this distance against seal length. Pick up to neutral weight and mark pipe, then
pick up for require space out or tension of tubing, or set down for required compression, then mark
pipe. Pull back out of hole, remove required tubing and install hanger and required pup joints
according to the measurements made on tubing. Because the completion is being run from the drill
floor, but the hanger has to be set at the well head some calculations are required.
In order to carry out the calculations certain distances need to be known.
1. The rig elevation
2. Length from centre of tie-down bolt groove in hanger to the threads on the bottom
hanger pup
3. The amount of overstand on the joint through the rig floor
4. The length of the first 3 or 4 joints below the rotary table
At this point enough tubing must be removed to allow the hanger and any accompanying pups to be
installed. As these two lengths are unlikely to the be the same generally more tubing has to be
removed and pups used to make up the shortfall.
‘Put in as much as, or less than is taken out’.
