Introduction
This chapter allows you to appreciate the richness of the culture of the seven
recognized Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) in the
province of Bukidnon. These indigenous communities include Bukidnon, Higaunon,
Manobo, Matigsalug, Talaandig, Tigwahanon, and Umayamnon. You are expected to
appreciate and to promote their unique culture by analyzing the meaning of their heritage
language, interpret meaning and significance of the cultural artifacts and practices to their
culture, and to help them promote their existing practices related to your field such as
economic/livelihood activities and/or financial management practices.

Activity 9. Identifying Material and Non-material Culture
Instructions: Provide at least 20 items that you have at home and things you do daily or
occasionally with your family. After listing them, identify whether they belong to
material culture (MC) or non-material culture (NMC). Write MC or NMC before the
numbers and the name of the items or events after the numbers. Material cultures are
tangible things perceivable by human senses such as food, while non-material cultures
are ideas and are not perceivable by human senses such as beliefs.

Assessment 4. Interpreting Meaning and Significance of Cultural Artifacts and
Practices
Instructions: Conduct a key informant interview (KII) with members and/or experts of
the ICCs/IPs to explore on their artifacts and practices. To be guided on this process,
research and study on the important points and reminders in doing interviews with an
IP member. Gather at least five artifacts or objects that are used by the community that
is assigned to you in their economic/livelihood activities or financial management
practices (see Appendix C). Provide their meaning and significance to the said
community by using the space provided (35pts).
