Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the Moon
(Taken from the Curriculum Guide) S5FE-IVg-h-7 (Day 3 of 10)
New Moon-the light from the sun is hitting the side of the moon facing away from the Earth.
Waxing- is when the
moon seems to be getting larger night by night.
First Quarter Moon-approximately one week later, we see half of
the lighted side of the [Link] is called a first quarter moon.
Full Moon-two weeks after the new moon, a full
moon [Link] entire lighted side of the moon is facing earth.
Key Concepts / Understandings to be Waning- Is when the moon seems to be getting
Developed smaller.
Last Quarter Moon-three weeks after the new moon, a third quarter moon appears. We can see half of the
lighted surface of the moon from earth.
Four weeks after the new moon, another new moon appears and the cycle starts again.

What you need:
4.2 Activity lighted lamp, small styrofoam ball, pencil, model of the earth( pupil), dark room
What to do:
1. Darken your room.
2. Place a lighted lamp on one side of the table.
10 minutes 3. Stick the pencil into the styrofoam ball and hold it in front of the lamp.
4. Look at the lighted part of the ball.
5. Turn around hollding the pencil with a ball counterclockwise slowly.
Note the lighted part of the ball.
4.3 Analysis Guide Question:
1. Why does the moon seen to change its shape?
10 minutes 2. Describe its changes.
3. Describe the different phase of the moon.
4.4 Abstraction When can we have different phases of the moon?
The lunar month is the 28 days it takes to go from one new moon to the next. During the lunar month, the
Moon goes through all its [Link] only see the Moon because sunlight reflects back to us from its
surface.
During the course of a month, the Moon circles once around the Earth. If we could magically look down on
our solar system, we would see that the half of the Moon facing the Sun is always lit. But the lit side does not
always face the Earth. As the Moon circles the Earth, the amount of the lit side we see changes. These
changes are known as the phases of the Moon and it repeats in a certain way over and over. Although this
cycle is a continuous process, there are eight distinct stages, called phases. These phases of the Moon, in
the sequence of their occurrence (starting from New Moon), are shown below.

4.3: Analysis
Guide Question:
1. Why does the moon seen to change its shape?
2. Describe its changes.
3. Describe the different phase of the moon.
Answer:
1. It changes its position as it travels around the Earth and the amount of the lit side we see
changes.
2. As the moon moves around the Earth, different amounts of its lighted and dark sides face
Earth.
3. a. New Moon-the light from the sun is hitting the side of the moon facing away from the
Earth.
b. Waxing Crescent-the moon's sun lighted surface first appear as a glowing crescent. It
grows larger and you see it as a thin curve phase of the moon.

d. Waxing Gibbous- gibbous comes from the word which means hump. At this phase, the
moon looks like it has a hump.
e. Full Moon-two weeks after the new moon, a full moon [Link] entire lighted side of
the moon is facing earth.
f. Last Quarter Moon-three weeks after the new moon, a third quarter moon appears. We can
see half of the lighted surface of the moon from earth.
g. Waning Crescent- the moon's lighted part is about to dissapear from the view of the Earth.
h. Waning Gibbous-appears to be getting smaller. At this phase, the moon seems to be
getting smaller with a hump.
