Report Writer: Tanner Olson

Reason for Referral: Clara is a 14-year-old female student who has been demonstrating
significant academic delays as compared to by her peers and classmates. Clara’s family and her

school. English is not her family’s first language, they speak Spanish and Clara is as fluent with
her English as she is her Spanish. Her parents are not quite as fluent as Clara. Her father is a
short distance truck driver and her mother is a teacher-assistant at the Pre School. Both are very
cooperative with the school and try to help as much as their English language range will allow
them to. Clara learned English at her former school and is comfortable reading, writing, and
speaking at an equal level compared to her Spanish ability.

Communication Skills:
English and Spanish reading, writing and speaking skills are essentially equivalent. Clara does
well at getting along with her peers; she can still work on expressing her feelings and emotions
in a better form. Clara plays well with others in a social setting and hopes one day to live with
friends.

Social Skills:
English and Spanish reading, writing and speaking skills are essentially equivalent. Enjoys and
plays well with other students as well as just socializing with others. Clara is bilingual and is
comfortable with either language in multiple settings.

Behavioral Considerations:
Clara needs to continue to work on her receiving and following of oral directions, as well as
transitioning from one task to the next. Clara is very motivated when she is performing a task
that she enjoys; she struggles to find motivation when she does not enjoy the task. She has the
tendency to burn out quickly in those types of situations. Clara needs to work on finding more
positive ways to express her feelings.

Physical Skills/ Fine and Gross Motor:

Clara is fully capable in terms of physical skills and fine motor skills; any limitations would be
due to language or behavioral deficits. Clara hopes to hold a job and live away from her family

Clara needs to show better control of behavioral emotions and discipline before she will be able
to enter the job field. She hopes to hold a job one day and live on her own. She is able to tell

place away from her family. She has basic skill sets right now that will one day allow her to find
a job in the food or retail industry. Clara would like to get married and all of the goals can play a
part in preparing her for her marriage or adulthood.
EDSP 525

Diagnosis and Recommendations:

Clara has the skills in the English and Spanish language that will allow her to be able to maintain
and remain in general education classroom settings. She communicates and socializes well with
her peers on a daily basis and has goals of one day living with her friends during adulthood.
These socialization skills and experiences are going to be crucial if Clara would like to reach her
goals. Clara should be provided with a small classroom setting to work in 3 different times a
week, ideally Monday/Wednesday/Friday for one and a half hour periods. This will allow the
specialized teacher and Clara time to properly work on the skills and deficiencies that she needs.
The focus in the smaller classroom setting should be on task to task transitioning, motivation for
every task, following oral directions, expressing feelings, as well as identifying desirable future
jobs or skills that could assist in acquiring that job in the future. This should be time for Clara
and the teacher to focus on specific skills that Clara is not receiving time to focus on in her
general classroom environment. Clara has a moderate learning disability, there are no previous
educational records to go off of so further tests and assessments need to be completed to further
the understanding of her disability. Her fluency in Spanish could be a skill that is relied on into
adulthood to assist Clara in finding a job or career. The ability to speak both English and
Spanish should prove to be very valuable throughout her life. Clara is very motivated by tasks
that she finds interesting, Clara should be working on recognizing theses tasks and identifying
which ones could be valuable in or as a job for adulthood.
