Chapter 3

Rizal received his early education in Calamba and Binan, learning reading, writing, arithmetic, and religion from his mother and private tutors. He then attended school in Binan, where he excelled in his studies but also got into fights with classmates. While in Binan, Rizal took painting lessons and had a daily routine of religious studies, school, chores, and play. He left Binan in 1870 to continue his education elsewhere. The execution of Gom-Bur-Za during this time inspired Rizal's desire to fight Spanish tyranny in the Philippines. Additionally, Rizal's mother was falsely accused and arrested in 1872 in an act of injustice.
