Lesson The Relationships Between
1 Social Sciences and
Applied Social Sciences
Social sciences are vital in our lives. Its different fields have roles that
improve our society as well as our daily lives. It helps us understand human
behaviour and explains human development. This also gives us learning from our
past, teaches us the present, and connects us to future. Social Sciences use
different tools to acquire information such as measurement, evaluation, and
interpretation that makes it a science. Where all the developed theories and
principles are being used and practice in Applied Social Sciences.
The disciplines in Applied Social Science are Counseling, Social Work, and
Communication, which draw their foundation from the theories and principles of
Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and other Social Sciences.
What’s In
The introduction to the disciplines and ideas of Applied Social Sciences will
serve as a jumping board and gateway to use and practice the tools, theories, and
principles of Social Sciences.
The student will use the competencies to themselves, in their interpersonal
relationships and in different life experiences. Though this discipline is a broad
field, it can develop an individual to acquire critical thinking skills, social concerns,
and responsiveness to fully address social phenomena. Especially at this time
where everyone is vulnerable to stress, anxieties, and uncertainties brought by the
pandemic and the “new normal” way of life. Counseling, Social Work, and
Communication are certainly essential to be offered by experts and other helping
professionals. As stated by D. Jary & J. Jary 2000 “Applied Social Science is the
application of social science theories, concepts, methods, and findings to problems
identified in the wider society”. For this, as we continue learning the different
disciplines of Applied Social Sciences, we shall be facing various challenges such
as knowing one’s strength and weaknesses, of sharing burden with other people
around you or even those you do not even know, struggles of having genuine social
and moral responsibilities, and etc.
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in
guiding the learners.

What is It
What is Social Science?
This science is engaged in the study of SOCIETY, SOCIAL RELATION
and HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
SOCIETY is a group of people living together that maintain culture, traditions,
and norms.
It is a group of people who live within the same territory, share a
common culture, perpetuate themselves through reproduction, and constitute
a more or less self-sufficient unit (Zanden, 1993)
SOCIAL RELATION is an interaction of two or more individuals, groups of
people or organizations.
HUMAN BEHAVIOR is an expression of thoughts and feelings of an individual.
Social Science may be divided into:
A. Pure Social Science
This is concerned with the search for knowledge and empirical truth
and the development of theory.
1. Anthropology is defined as the “scientific study of humanity, the
similarities and diversity of cultures, and attempts to present an
integrated picture of humankind”. It studies the biological, social, and
cultural development of humankind and seeks to find answers to
questions of why people are different and how similar they are (Howard
and Hattis,1992).
2. Geography this is the study of places and their relationship to people
and environment.
3. Linguistics is a scientific study on human language, symbols and its
development.
4. Psychology is a scientific study of human brain and behaviours.
5. Demographic is the study of population. It is primarily concerned on
the size , distribution and change of population
6. Economics is the study of production, distribution and consumption
of goods and services
7. History is the study of past events that affects the development of the
present society.
8. Political Science is the study of political systems, government and
international relations.
9. Sociology is a study about human interactions, the relationship that
occurs within the group and the results of these interactions.
B. Applied Social Science
This is the study that applies the concepts, theories, and theoretical
models of social science to understand the SOCIETY, SOCIAL ISSUES and
SOCIAL PROBLEMS.
1. Counseling is the application of social science that empowers an
individual and give guidance to clients that experience difficulty in
adjustment, issues in mental health, and career goals
It is defined as one person helping another person but not anyone can
give counseling to anybody. Counseling is a field that needs experts to
deliver it to individuals who need guidance in career, in maladjustment
and other personal issues in life. Certainly, it is difficult to give counseling
when you have dual relationships with your clients. For example, a parent
to his child or a husband to his wife.
2. Social Work is the application of social science that focuses on social
change, empowers clients to attain social justice and wellness.
It is directed to help alleviate the conditions of people with problems
including the poorest of the poor, people with physical and mental
disabilities, victims of natural calamities, and children with special needs.
3. Communication is the application of social science that uses verbal and
nonverbal means to improve lives in the society.
It is a multi-disciplinary task that influences human daily lives. This
discipline can be expressed as written, verbal, nonverbal, and multimodal
forms. As a discipline, it studies the interpersonal relationship,
administration, culture, linguistic theory and criticism, performance
studies, argumentation and persuasion, technologically facilitated
communication and popular culture

Activity 2.
Read and understand parts of the article entitled “Why Social Science?
Because Social Science Makes Sense of the Institutions That Shape Our Lives” by
Steven Rathgeb Smith, Ph.D., Executive Director, American Political Science
Association
Put simply, the social sciences are important because they create
better institutions and systems that affect people’s lives every day.
Creating frameworks for understanding the origins and effects of
regime type, the purpose of political parties, the reasons for
polarization, the structure of social networks, the goals and
structures of government agencies, or the challenges and
opportunities faced by service providers and nonprofits are all
attempts to make sense of structures that have real and profound on-
the-ground impacts.
Importantly, social scientific approaches, whether they immerse
researchers in new perspectives or systematically analyze and
compare institutions and phenomena, often challenge “common-
sense” or prevailing understandings. These studies provide a better
evidence-based grounding for evaluating our social and political
world. Clearer evidence and greater knowledge can help strengthen
institutions by providing data for policy outcomes and better
mechanisms for promoting civic participation and engagement.
Just as significant, a beyond building more accurate and
functional general understandings of the world and its institutions
and social and political systems, social science helps individuals
better understand how to engage with these systems both for their
own and society’s benefit. In a democracy, this understanding is
crucial.
We recognize the importance of the natural sciences in
investigating the physical world, including personal health, space
travel, and improved transportation. However, the actual prevention
of disease or the adoption of a new and improved public transit
system is a political problem, requiring an understanding of political
institutions, public management, and policy implementation. Thus,
social sciences help people understand how to interact with the social
world—how to influence policy, develop networks, increase
government accountability, and promote democracy. These
challenges, for many people around the world, are immediate, and
their resolution can make a vast difference in people’s lives.
While many social science disciplines are important in helping
people to understand and engage with the wide variety of institutions
that shape their lives, political science is particularly valuable in
helping people learn to be citizens. Through participating in
government at all levels, holding lawmakers accountable, and
upholding democratic norms and values, individuals must have the
resources to understand how government works and how laws and
regulations are made; evaluate policies and outcomes based on
effectiveness and values; make informed decisions about policy
preferences; and, especially, understand the importance of
participating in government, from voting to protesting. Political
scientists are essential in providing these resources, in classrooms
and in the public sphere.
Consequently, political science, through teaching and research,
provides a solid framework for understanding the political and social
systems that shape our lives. Social science research tells us that
effective public services, active participation in public policy, and
engagement with local community organizations are very challenging
if the government is not transparent and accountable and citizens are
not sufficiently engaged. Thus, social science is important because it
provides an evidence-based foundation on which to build a more
effective government and democracy. Why social science? Because it
helps people understand and engage with the key political and social
institutions, thus benefiting individuals and society as a whole.
Questions for Interaction:
1. What is the importance of social science today as stated in the article?
2. What did you learn from this article?
3. How do you appreciate the value of studying Social Science and Applied
Social Science after reading the article?
