Assignment

Q 1. If z ≠ 1 and is real, then the point represented by the complex

number z lies:

Either on the real axis or a circle passing through

A the origin.

B On a circle with centre at the origin

Either on real axis or on circle not passing

C through the origin

D On the imaginary axis.

Q 2. The number of complex numbers z such that |z - 1| = |z + 1| = |z - i|

equals

D 0
Assignment

Q 2. The number of complex numbers z such that |z - 1| = |z + 1| = |z - i|

equals

A 1

B 2

C ∞

D 0
Solution 2:

Let z = x + iy
|z - 1| = |z + 1| (x - 1)2 + y2
= (x + 1)2 + y2
⇒ Re z = 0 ⇒ x = 0
|z - 1| = |z - i| (x - 1)2 + y2
= x2 + (y - 1)2
⇒x=y
|z + 1| = |z - i| (x + 1)2 + y2
= x2 + (y - 1)2
Only (0, 0) will satisfy all conditions.
⇒ Number of complex number z = 1.

Q 5. If z1 and z2 are two non-zero complex numbers such that

|z1 + z2| = |z1| + |z2|, then arg z1 - arg z2 is equal to

B -𝝅

C 0

Assignment

Q 5. If z1 and z2 are two non-zero complex numbers such that

|z1 + z2| = |z1| + |z2|, then arg z1 - arg z2 is equal to

B -𝝅

C 0

D
Solution 5:

Given that, |z1 + z2| = |z1| + |z2|

|z1 + z2| is the vector sum of z1 and z2. So |z1 + z2| should be < |z1| + |z2| but
here they are equal to z1 and z2 are collinear.
S if z1 makes an angle θ with x axis then z2 will also make θ angle.
∴ arg z1 - arg z2 = θ - θ = 0
Assignment

Q 6. Let z and w be complex numbers such that and arg zw =

𝝿. Then arg z equals

D
Assignment

Q 6. Let z and w be complex numbers such that and arg zw =

𝝿. Then arg z equals

D
Solution 6:

[i complex number represent (0, 1) point on

imaginary axis and Arg (i) means the angle
made by the point (0, 1) with real axis which is
π/2

Now given that Arg (zw) = π

Assignment

Q 7. If z = x - iy and z1/3 = p + iq, then is equal to

A -2

B -1

C 2

D 1
Assignment

Q 7. If z = x - iy and z1/3 = p + iq, then is equal to

A -2

B -1

C 2

D 1
Solution 7:

Given z1/3 = p + iq

⇒ z = (p + iq)3

= p3 + (iq)3+ 3p(iq) (p + iq)

= p3 - iq3 + 3ip2q - 3pq2

= p(p2 - 3q2) - iq (q2 - 3p2)

Given that z = x - iy

∴ x - iy = p (p2 - 3q2) - iq(q2 - 3p2)

By comparing both sides we get,

Assignment

Q 8. If |z2 - 1| = |z|2 + 1, then z lies on

A An Ellipse

B The imaginary axis

C A Circle

D The real axis

Assignment

Q 8. If |z2 - 1| = |z|2 + 1, then z lies on

A An Ellipse

B The imaginary axis

C A Circle

D The real axis

Solution 8:

Given |z2 - 1| = |z|2 + 1,

By squaring both sides we get,

|z2 - 1|2 = (|z|2 + 1)2

Solution 8:

⇒x=0

∴ z is purely imaginary

So, it is lie on the imaginary axis.

C x =1

D No value of x
Assignment

Q 11. If sinx + icos 2x and cosx - i sin2x are conjugate to each other, then:

C x =1

D No value of x
Solution 11:

Given that conjugate of cosx - i sin2x is sinx + i cos 2x.

and conjugate of cosx - i sin2x is cosx + i sin2x.

According to the questions,

cos x + i sin2x = sinx + i cos 2x

Comparing the real and imaginary parts of the above equation, we have

cos x = sinx and sin 2x = cos 2x

⇒ tanx = 1 and tan 2x =1

⇒ x = π/4 and x = π/8

Which is not possible for at the same time.

Therefore, no solution exists.
