SOLUTIONS:-
 # 1 - 5% HNO3 in Alcohol (Anhydrous Neosol).
CAUTION:-
Acid and alcohol are very
 # 2 - 10% HCL in Alcohol (Anhydrous Neosol).

 # 3 - 5% NH4OH in Water.

TIME:- should make these solutions,
Solution #1 - 4 Minutes. and eye protection should be
Solution #2 - 8 Minutes.
Solution #3 - 4 Minutes. used.
PREPARATION: -
 Obtain three glass or plastic containers that are just large enough to fit the part into. This minimizes the
amount of solution needed. Glass baking dishes or the bottom of plastic jug work well.
 Thoroughly clean part to remove oil and contaminants.

PROCEDURE: -
 Put on eye protection.
 Place in Solution # 1 for 4 minutes. Note: -
Make fresh solutions as per
 Drain off excess solution but do not rinse. following frequency
 Place in solution # 2 for 8 minutes. Solution # 1: after every 5 days
Solution # 2: after every 3 days
 Drain off excess solution but do not rinse Solution # 3: everyday
 Place in solution # 3 for 4 minutes.
 Remove from Solution # 3 and drain.
 Dry with an air hose immediately.
 Coat with oil to prevent rusting.

COMMENTS:-
 The first solution etches the entire part black. The second solution removes the black selectively
according to microstructure. It is important to use the exact time designated or there will not be enough
blackening in stage # 1 or too much removal in stage # 2.
 If too much staining occurs, try rinsing with water or alcohol after solution # 3. Induce a burn on scrap
piece with a hand grinder and run thru the procedure to insure that the procedure is being done properly.
