Father's Day
Father's Day is an American holiday when children honor their fathers. A
woman named Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day. Sonora’s
mother died when she was a young girl. After that, her father, William Smart,
took care of her. Sonora wanted to honor her father and other fathers with a
celebration. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she decided to have the first
Father's Day celebration in June. The celebration was on June 19, 1910. In 1972,
Father's Day became a national holiday. Today Americans celebrate Father's Day
on the third Sunday of June.
