Machine Elements Design: Fasteners Exercise

This document contains questions from an exercise on fasteners for a Machine Elements Design course. It asks students to calculate properties of different bolts and joints between steel plates, including influence cones, bolt dimensions, stiffness, stresses, and safety factors. Students are provided with tables of standard screw dimensions and material properties and asked to select appropriate bolts based on given loads and joint configurations. Calculations include torque, preload, stresses, and suitability of bolt grades.

Exercise 2 – Fasteners

Question (1)
It is required to join two steel plates of 25 mm thickness each using M12×1.25 through bolt.

You are asked to:

1. Draw the influence cone in the following cases:
• Using the bolt with standard washer.
• Using the bolt with standard washer at 30 mm from one edge.
• Using the bolt without standard washer.
• Using the bolt with standard washer to join the abovementioned plates &
in between Al gasket of 5 mm thickness.

2. Select the suitable bolt dimensions in each case using the attached screw
dimensions table then write the designation of the bolt in the form of M
do×L×b×p.

3. Calculate the bolt stiffness & joint stiffness in each case.

Note: Standard lengths (L) are available from 50 mm to 150 mm each 5 mm & from 150 mm each 10 mm.
Note: Esteel = 210 GPa & EAl = 70 GPa

Question (2)
It is required to join two steel plates of 25 mm thickness each using M12×1.25 stud or M12×1.25 tap bolt.

You are asked to in each case:

1. Draw the influence cone.

2. Select the suitable bolt dimensions in each case using the

attached screw dimensions table then write the designation of
the bolt in the form of M do×L×b×b1×p.

3. Calculate the bolt stiffness & joint stiffness in each case.

Note: Standard lengths (L) are available from 50 mm to 150 mm each 5 mm & from 150 mm each 10 mm.

Question (3)
For M 14×1.5 stud of 125 mm2 stress area, find the following:
1. The major, minor and mean diameter of the bolt.
2. Helix angle of the bolt.
3. Mean collar (seat) diameter of the nut.

Question (4)
For M 12×1.25 through bolt, find the following:
1. The frictional torque between bolt teeth and
nut teeth in terms of Fi
2. The frictional torque between nut and washer
in terms of Fi
3. The total tightening torque required to
produce a preload of 10000 N.
4. Assembly and working stresses in a bolt if the
max load per bolt during working condition is
17.5kN.
5. The suitability of using high tensile bolt (H.T.B)
of 3.6 grade.
6. If the available (H.T.B) grades are 3.6, 4.6, 5.8, 6.8, choose the suitable grade of bolt. Using safety
factor of two.
7. The actual safety factor during assembly and working condition.
Note: The coefficient of friction between steel and steel µsteel/steel = 0.2.

Question (5)
For M 10×1.25 tap bolt of 4.8 grade, calculate the initial tension in bolt based on the assembly stress only
to achieve a safety factor of two.
Note: The coefficient of friction between steel and steel µsteel/steel = 0.2.
