CHAPTER 2
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study aimed at determining the senior high school students’ level of aspiration and
level of readiness in pursuing senior high degree. It probed into whether there is a difference in
the level of aspiration and level of readiness in pursuing senior high degree when grouped
according to age, gender, average monthly family income and academic track. It also looked
into the relationship between the respondents’ level of aspiration and their level of readiness in
pursuing senior high degree.
The interview based narrative study is a term that subsumes a group of approaches that
in turn rely on the written or spoken words or visual representation of individuals. These
approaches typically focus on the lives of individuals as told though their own stories the
emphasis in such approaches is on the story typically both what and how is narrated narrative
methods can be considered “real world measures” that appropriate when “real life problems”
are investigated. In basic linear approach they experiences of a single individual embracing
stories of the life and exploring the learned significance of those individual experiences. In most
cases one will be creating an aggregate of narrative each bearing on the others.
Research Environment
Students are the clients of institutions and educators. In order for them to equip with
the best knowledge, understanding the new trends in technology is needed. Since the
generation of computers arises, student learning not just at the tertiary level but also in the
high school level should elevate into the technology-oriented classroom. This study aimed to
answer the engagement and readiness of the Senior High School Students by determining the
profile of the SHS students, the level of readiness SHS Students for Open and Distance
Education, and the linear correlation of variables. A Proposed Online Learning Environment
Model was also discussed. The SHS Students of the current SY 2018-2019 were the sources of
data for this study. Frequency, Percentage, Average weighted mean and linear correlation was
used as a statistical treatment. The result of the study shows that the majority of students were
engaged and ready for Open and Distance Education. The proposed Online Learning
Environment Model enables students in the Senior High School level to fully utilized distance
education.
Research Respondents
This study focused on 15-20 participants aged 20 to 35 years old. Regardless of gender
to avoid unintentional gender biases, who are teachers in Cabancalan National High School.
However, the participant gender was still considered essentials in the investigation of the
gathered data as the research progresses.
Since our study focuses on Readiness of Cabancalan National High School in implementing k-12
Curriculum, respondents should be aware their perspectives and views of their curriculum,
since the participants approximately 20 to 35 years old are usually teachers who are teaching in
Cabancalan National High School they are suitable respondents of our said study.
The research respondents were chosen through the use of purposive sampling, a type of
non-random or biased sampling, which is called judgmental sampling, this named as such since
participants are chosen personally by the researchers based on their own experience and
opinions according to a set of standards or criteria. The researchers used a theoretical sample, a
type of purposive sampling, which is helpful in understanding concepts since this study aimed
to test and prove the discussed theories.
The personal judgments of the researchers in choosing possible respondents were
considered essential since this helped indicate whether the flow of the observation and
interview methods were done appropriately or not and led to this study intended results. This
also produced challenge on the whole research process, hence, the researchers were very
much aware that this and the whole research process were ought to be done carefully in order
to achieve the intended outcome of this narrative study. The said participants who passed the
standards or criteria were considered as appropriate sample since this study is focused on
Teachers who are teaching in Cabancalan National High School and the scope is readiness of
implementing k-12 curriculum, therefore the participants of the said study are essential sources
of initial information.
Sampling Procedure
The purpose of the study was to describe the level of research capabilities of students in
the senior high school department of a local university. Differences in the capabilities of
students when grouped according to gender were also investigated. In addition, in-depth
understanding of their perceived research capability levels was explored. A sequential
explanatory mixed-method approach was employed, with 46 Grade 12 students being chosen
as respondents through convenience sampling. The study started from a quantitative
exploration of the students' conceptual understanding of the four components of research (the
nature of inquiry, understanding of literature and studies, research method, and interpreting
results). The Research Achievement Test (RAT) developed prior to this study was used to
quantitatively describe the students' research competencies. Observations on their test
performances were used to develop the interview component of the test. Results showed that
overall, the students' research capabilities were only at the average level. Male and female
students were comparable in the ability to conduct research. Opportunities for quantitative
instruction were lacking in the context of the participants. The implications for research
instruction are discussed in the paper.
