Understanding Rocks and the Rock Cycle

The document outlines a two-day lesson plan on rocks for 6th grade students. Day 1 introduces the three main types of rocks - igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic - and how they are formed through the rock cycle. Students do hands-on modeling with chocolate to understand rock formation and discuss the rock cycle. Day 2 has student groups present on identifying features and formation methods of each rock type. The lesson aims to explain rock characteristics and classification.

Unit/Chapter name: Rocks Grade: VI

Subject area/s: Date: 27/09/2020

Learning Objectives/Outcomes/Targets

● I will be able to explain the characteristics of rocks and categorize three main types of rock
● I will be able to discuss how rock cycles through the earth.

Rationale
● Students will identify the three types of rocks.
● Students will be able to define and describe how the three major types of rocks are formed.
● SWBAT creates a diagram of the rock cycle that includes accurate, reliable information.

Day 1
PGDLT 2020-21 1
Introduction/Hook activity:

Ask your students what they know about rocks

T: Notice the slides and find what is common in them? T shows Slides 1 to 4 in quick
succession.
T takes quick responses.
Expected Answer: Rocks, stones and pebbles
T: “When we looked at Aravalli video, you noticed the hills. What do you think the
hills are made of?”
EA: rocks, stone, pebbles and gravel.
T: What is the difference between them?
ER: Stone, pebbles and gravel are smaller units of a rock. Slide 4& 5
T:” Which domain of earth the hills belong to?”
Answer: Lithosphere
T establishes that the topic for the day is ROCKS.
T: Can we take a guess about what is a rock made up of? Show Slide 4 and make a
5 mins clear mention that the Rocks are made up of one or more minerals.
10 mins (TEACHER RESOURCE ON MINERALS)

T:Ask students to write the response in a padlet, what they think about rocks and why
they look different.
T: let us discuss the different types of rocks and how they are formed?

T to release the LT:

I can explain different types of rocks and their formation using the rock cycle.

S will share the experience on padlet/word doc.

ER

PGDLT 2020-21 2
Stages ER (Expected Response)

Stage 1 After you have pressed the chocolate

scrapings in the foil you could see
different layers of chocolate.

Stage 2 Once the chocolate cools after melting,

we could see it has stuck back in the
form of a rock.

Stage 3 Once the chocolate melted and cooled

chocolate is now similar to a rock

T:Will take few verbal responses in the class and proceed with the detailed discussion.
T: Will explain the type of rocks
The first type is called igneous. Igneous rocks are composed of melted rock that
hardens and cools. A few examples include obsidian and pumice.
The second type of rock is called sedimentary, and they're formed from material that is
settled into layers. The layers are squeezed until they harden into rock. A few
examples include limestone, breccia, and sandstone.
The third type of rock is called metamorphic. These rocks are changed by heat and
pressure. A few examples include slate and marble.

Rock Cycle Text will be given to all students on teamie. Ask them to read and
annotate for terms that are unfamiliar or new to them. They can be encouraged to
attempt to make the Rock Cycle as it says in the instruction.

Crew Work for the Rock cycle to be shared and will be done by students as crews (1
per crew in the class). T to make crews randomly and ask them to fill the rock cycle.
(In case less time is there, the task can be done individually by students and 2-3
random responses can be taken in class.
Closure:
T will take random responses from crews.

T: will share the type of rocks found in Gurugram, Quartzite

T Resource Slide 15 and 16
Quartzite is used for construction activities and can be found in abundance in
Aravallis. So mining helps to extract essential minerals and rocks from the area. Whole Class

Setting context to our surroundings: Gurugram

Slide 16- to help students recap what are the different rocks present in Gurugram and
their distribution.

T : Will share the video for the clarity of the rock

Closure:
● Rock song to understand rocks.
● Students are encouraged to go ahead and explain their understanding through
different ways to present their learning on types of rocks and rock cycle- like
poem/designing a game/art etc.
● An assignment section can be created by the T to see the submissions on the
same that can help teachers to know students learning.
