Archiving emails in Mozilla Thunderbird

This guide will help you to free up space on your PagePlay email account by
saving emails to your computer rather than keeping them on the server.
This guide is only useful if you set up the email to use IMAP, where
messages are stored on the server. With POP, messages are download to
your computer when you check your mail and are then removed from the
server.
This is for users who already access their email using Mozilla Thunderbird.

If you haven't archived emails before, you will first need to create an folder
to move your emails to.
Do create a new archive folder, right click on the "Local Folders" heading on
the left hand column and then click on "New Folder..."
You will then need to give the folder a name, here we have entered
"Archive" for simplicity.
Choose "Local Folders" from the "Create as a subfolder of" dropdown and
then click on the "Create Folder" button

You will then see your archiving folder in the left column under "Local
Folders"
You can now either drag and drop emails from your Inbox to your archiving
folder in the left column, or you can right click on emails and choose to
move them. See the example screenshot below.
Remember, you can drag and drop or choose to move multiple emails at
once.

system. The emails can be moved or archived in any suitable local folder by the following
steps:

1. Locate Mozilla Thunderbird profile directory on the system, in following way:

 Run “%appdata%” command on system.

 Click Thunderbird>Profiles and choose the required Thunderbird profile.
2. Click on Mail folder to view all the folders of mailbox.
3. Select the required email account for which data needs to be archived
4. Drag the required folders to the specified location in system.
Note: Drag the mail file, which are without any file extension i.e. to archive Inbox folder, you
need to drag Inbox file instead of [Link] file.

Today we are going to show you how to speed up the email client Thunderbird, by archiving
part of the stored emails. The idea is to combine backing up emails regularly, with the
benefits of being able to remove emails from the email client that are old and not needed on a
regular basis. In case they are needed they can still be accessed in the archiving software.

Before we start, we are going to create a full backup of the Thunderbird profile
with MozBackup. Just download and run the backup software, and select to backup the
Mozilla Thunderbird profile. Make sure all data is included in the backup (default settings).

Tools > Options, switching to the Advanced tab, there to the Network & Disk Space tab, and
enabling Compact folders when it will save over x KB.
Thunderbird may start up and feel noticeably faster after archiving and deleting emails in the
client. This largely depends on the amount of mails that have been stored in the client prior to
the operation. A user with a few hundred mails will probably not notice a speed improvement
at all, while a user with tens of thousands of emails likely will.

Archive Options in Account Settings is not active

I would like to use a Yearly Archived Folder but the Archive Options in
Account Settings is not active and cannot be selected, how can I make it
active?

Gmail stores all emails in 'All Mail' folder. That is everything received, sent or
archived.
Archived can also mean removing all labels, so you can in effect delete an email
from eg: Inbox and if it is not actually put into the gmail server 'Trash/Bin' folder,
then only the label is removed and the email is archived in the 'All Mail' folder.
This could mean that emails you deleted whilst setup to use Pop mail account
could still be in the 'All Mail' folder using up your quota.
If you tell imap gmail account to Archive an email then gmail automatically
removes all labels and stores in 'All Mail'. So, any emails you archived whilst
using imap setup will be in 'All Mail' folder.
This explains why the 'Archive options' button is not working for you. Note: Note
that the 'Archive options'... button is disabled for Gmail accounts, as it is not
necessary to define the archive granularity with Gmail.

How can I get access to my Archive folder

I have saved some e-mails to the Archive folder. However, I can not locate the
Archive folder. It does not even appear on the list of folders on the left side of the
screen. The website explains how to configure the archive folder, but nowhere
does it explain how to get to the Archive folder. What am I doing wrong? What
steps do I need to follow in order to have the Archive folder appear in my list of
folders so that I can open it and explore its usefulness and flexibility.

I have found how to locate your archived messages. I haven't done this, so I can't
follow through to check.
Open Thunderbird. Right click on your account name in the left pane. Click on
settings. Click on copies and folders. In the centre of this box, it tells you where
your archived messages are located.
