Auditory Learner: The Listener
• The auditory learner needs to talk and listen.
• Has a tape recorder in their head and will play
words over and over again to remember
• Often process verbally and will need to interact
Who through conversation
They Are • Perceive affirmation and encouragement through
praise
• Sensitive to the tone and inflection in your voice.
• Typically detail oriented and can recall details in conversations easily
• Words matter to auditory learners, so choose them carefully!
Hearing is key! Auditory learners will learn best through:
• Oral instructions
How • Reading aloud, being read to, audio books and lectures
• Listening and responding aloud to information
They Learn • Repeating and talking through concepts and theories
Best • Verbally summarizing and then writing down summaries immediately after
• Dialogue and debate
• Talking out ideas, interests, problems, and possibilities
• Noise can be distracting, so limit noises or provide headphones
While • Give oral directions, and have the child repeat them
They’re • Read and do many activities aloud together. Think sight word drills, math
facts, etc.
Learning • Encourage children to use a tape recorder in addition to taking notes
Focus on listening and speaking. They learn best by doing the following.
• Reading aloud
• Discussing what has been read, seen, or heard to confirm understanding
What • Using a tape recorder to take notes, make lists, etc.
• Complementing reading with auditory books
They Need • Reading essays and written work aloud while editing and proofing
to Learn • Interview- Write questions for and hold an interview or be interviewed
about a topic
• Debate or acting it out
• Giving oral reports or taking oral exams
