Math Newspaper Project

Who? You and a partner, you individually, or a small group of 3

What? Your goal is to create a section for our class newspaper relating to one of the
math topics we’ve learned so far this year.

When? The project will be due by ____________________________________.

Where? Math class - Yes, newspaper writing in math class.

Why? It’s time to take a creative spin on Math. We’re joining creative writing and math
together, to make a silly and educational newspaper that all can enjoy.

Rules:
Think about a newspaper. There’s the articles, otherwise known as “editorials,”
the want-ads, otherwise known as the “classifieds,” the advice columns, the comics, the
ads, and the crosswords. We are going to turn our math concepts into things to write
about for these sections. Check out some of Miss Morone’s examples!

Your job is to…

- choose one math topic from the list (on the back page) that we’ve covered
- one section of writing you’d like to write about using your topic
- one entertainment section to do for fun after you’ve finished.

Examples…

 An editorial about a successful weight-loss story of a heavy duty fraction that

learned how to “reduce” its weight.

 A number writes a letter to the advice column, asking for help in finding another
number that he’s compatible with (advice columns will need a letter written to
the newspaper, and a response back)

 A classified ad about a container looking for the best customary measuring unit
to fill it
Math Topic Choices:
 Place value
 Rounding and Estimation
 Compatible Numbers
 Decimals
 Adding and Subtracting Fractions
 Simplifying Fractions
 Equivalent fractions
 Polygons
 Lines, Line segments, and Rays
 Solid figures
 Multiplication (feel free to include fact families)
 Division (feel free to include fact families)
 Linear Measurement (customary or metric)
 Liquid Measurement (ex. cups, pints, quarts, gallons, oz., tbsp, etc)
 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
 Conversions
 Number lines

Written Sections:

 Advice Column
 Classified ad

Entertainment Sections:

 Comics

Make a star next to at least 3 possible math topics that you are interested in. You will get
to pick your topic in the order that you are chosen from a raffle.

You must get your idea approved before beginning the planning.

All materials will be provided by Miss Morone. Websites for puzzle creators and
handouts for comics can be found on my webpage.
