COMPETENCY TYPE QUESTIONS

1. In what way the plot of the story First Flight and Black Aeroplane brings about

certain commonalities in their flow and climax?

Ans. The story First Flight deals with the first attempt of a young seagull to learn
the art of FLYING. But being afraid of the height of the cliff, and the vast expanse of
the sea below him, prevented him from flying along with his two brothers and his
sister. Hence, he was left alone in the ledge. He became very hungry as he had
not eaten anything in the past twenty-four hours. But, just in front his ledge, his
parents, brothers and his sister were persuading him by cackling, catching and
tearing the best fish they liked, which made the young seagull more hungry. At last,
maddened with hunger the young seagull took the first flight forgetting his fear.

Similarly, the narrator of the black aeroplane was flying up in the sky, with a lot of
enthusiasm and delight with the mere thought of enjoying his holiday with his family
members in England. When he travelled 150 kilometres from France, he
encountered a dangerous storm clouds in the sky. It was so huge that he could
neither fly above the clouds nor could he fly around it. He was frightened. Being
determined to reach his family and the thought of eating the big English breakfast,
he overlooked the danger posed by the storm clouds, flew through the clouds and
landed safely.

2. From the beginning to the end of the lesson the black aeroplane is a mystery.

How?

Ans. The narrator started his journey with old Dakota – 088. At that time, the sky was
clear. But suddenly, he found himself in the midst of black clouds. There was
zero visibility, everything was black. He couldn’t find any way to escape. To his
shock, the compass and the radio were dead. He was lost in the storm. All of
a sudden, the narrator saw a black aeroplane and was helped by the pilot SAME
AEROPLANE. For the next half an hour he was flying behind that plane like an
obedient child. There was only enough fuel in the tank to fly for five or ten
minutes when suddenly he saw two rows of lights. It was a runway in front of
him. He safely landed at the airport. He went to the control centre to ask who the
other pilot was. To his horror, his was the only flight that could be seen on the
radar. Who was the other pilot on the strange black aeroplane flying in the
storm, without lights, remained a mystery to the narrator.
