CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study focuses on experimental design to experiment if there is a significant effect of
artificial light in the growth of tomato plant without the present of sunlight. The researchers
identify the independent variables which are tomato plant, the artificial light and the sunlight and
the dependent variable is the growth of the tomato plant. This research study uses quantitative
approach.
Materials
The materials that will be needed in the study are tomato seeds, (10) ten kilowatts
incandescent light bulb, extension wire, (20) twenty disposable cups and (2) two 15 × 5.5 inches
rectangular pots where the tomato seeds will be planted. The plant will require a small amount of
water which can help the plants to grow. To capture additional information, the researchers will
use Huawei phone camera. To accomplish the study, the researchers will use a ruler to measure
the height of the tomato plants and to determine its growth. Using the writing materials the
researchers will accumulate the necessary observation in the study.
Ethical consideration for plants
Recently, the Swiss Parliament asked a panel of philosophers, lawyers, geneticists and
theologians to determine the meaning of dignity when it pertains to plants. The team published a
19
treatise on “the moral consideration of plants for their own sake.” The treatise established that
vegetation has innate value and that it is morally wrong to partake in activities such as the
“decapitation of wildflowers at the roadside without rational reason.” Over a decade ago, an
amendment was added to the Swiss constitution in order to defend the dignity of all creatures —
including vegetation — against unwanted repercussions of genetic engineering. The amendment
was turned into law and is known as the Gene Technology Act. However the law itself didn’t say
anything specific about plants, until recently, when the law was amended to include them
(Hamill, 2008).
The use of synthetic agrochemicals and emphasizing farming in accordance with agro-
ecological guidelines, organic farming acknowledges the integrity of plants as an essential
element of its natural approaches to crop production. For cultivated plants, integrity refers to their
inherent nature, wholeness, completeness, species-specific characteristics, and their being in
balance with their (organically farmed) environment, while accomplishing their “natural aim.”
(Lammerts, 2005)
The ethical notions have been further elaborated by formulating human responsibility
and respect towards crop plants. Responsibility and respect can only be shown by providing crop
plants the right to be nurtured and to express natural behavior at all levels of integrity (Struik,
2005).
Experimental Procedure
A. Gathering of materials
The researchers will gather all the materials needed in the study. The researchers will first
set up the incandescent light bulb in an empty room.
20
B. Preparation of seeds set up
Twenty (20) tomato seeds will be selected in the study. (10) Ten seeds will be planted in
the first rectangular pot and another (10) ten will be planted in the 2 nd rectangular pot. The first
rectangular pot will be put inside the house where the incandescent light has been set up. And the
2nd rectangular pot will be put outside the house where sunlight can easily strike the seeds. The
researchers will let the seeds grow for 1 week and observe and supply water every day.
C. Transferring the plant in disposable cup
Among the 20 seedlings grown, the researchers will first measure the height of the
tomato plant. And then transfer the (10) ten tomato plant in the disposable cups, plant each
disposable cup with one tomato plant and apply inorganic fertilizer. The same procedure will be
done in the other (10) ten tomato plant.
D. Monitoring the growth
Before transferring the plant the researchers will first measure the height and determine
the color of leaves for the first day of observation.
The observation will be done for 1 month. For the 1 st week of observation the
researchers will measure its height, determine the color of leaves and capture the plant for the
documentation. The same procedure will be done in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th week of observation.
To determine the color of its leaves the researchers will make a scale, the light green
will scaled (1), the green will scaled (2) and dark green will scaled (3). The researchers will
water the plant every day and the incandescent light will be turned off during night time and turn
it on again when it is daylight.

Data Analysis
The data to be gathered will be analyzed using statistical method depending on the
objectives of the study.
