Herodotus: The Father of History

Herodotus is considered the "Father of History" as he was the first historian to systematically collect and critically arrange historical materials to produce a historiographic narrative. He traveled widely in the Persian Empire and Greece. Eventually exiled from his home of Halicarnassus, he joined a new colony in Thurii, Italy, where he died. His life's work was called "The Histories", which traced the growth of the Persian Empire and history of the Greeks, including natural phenomena like the Nile River.

READING IN THE PHILIPPINE HISTORY

 Why is Herodotus considered as the “Father of History”? He was a Greek historian born in
Halicarnassus in the Persian Empire. He was the first historian known to have broken from
Homeric tradition to treat historical subjects as a method of investigation specifically, by
collecting his materials systematically and critically, and then arranging them into a
historiographic narrative.
Describe his life, works, and achievements. The post his photo inside the box.

a. His life and achievements:

Herodotus traveled widely in that empire and in Greece. Eventually, exiled from Halicarnassus, and
having spent some years where he joined the new colony of Thurii in southern Italy, where he died.
He is the author of the earliest surviving work of history and one of the masterpieces of Greek
literature. Herodotus introduces his book as "the inquiries ( historiai ) of Herodotus of Halicarnassus."
The usual title in English translations is  The Histories. Herodotus traces the growth of the Persian
empire itself as well as the history of the Greeks. He also has a strong interest in natural matters such
as the characteristics of the Nile river.

b. His life works and Photo:

Herodotus spent his entire life on just one project: An account of the origins and execution of the
Greco-Persian wars that he called “The Histories”. His purpose was to explore the interaction,
peaceful and warlike, between Europe and Asia. Some of his best stories are of kings, but he takes
just as much interest in the adventures of differently privileged people—physicians, athletes,
merchants, priests, and cooks.
