Directions: Read [Link] and Laurel, Jose

B. Jr. 1960. The trials of the Rizal Bill. Historical Bulletin 4(2): 130-139 to answer the
following questions:
a. Why only Jose Rizal was selected to be studied?
b. What are the goals and purpose of this law?
c. Do you think the RA 1425 is an effective tool in instilling the ideals of nationalism to
the youth?
d. How did the Catholic Church react to the passage of this law?

ANSWERS:

1. The reason of selecting Rizal to give more attention to and is added to the curricula to
foster better appreciation of Jose Rizal’s times and on the role he played on combating
the Spanish tyranny in the country. This is to remember the love and devotion he had
showed and even on the expense of his life. His works has been a fuel for national
character development and his sacrifices will always be an inspiration for the youth to be
patriotic just like him. Moreover, including Rizal to be studied helps recognize the
importance of Rizal’s teachings and ideologies in relation to the present condition and
situations of the recent society.
2. The purpose of law is to appreciate the acts of Rizal and foster the development of youth
in terms of citizenship. Rizal has contributed to Philippine nationalism thus, the law is to
rededicate the lives of the youth to the ideals and nationalism, for which heroes lived and
died. This is to pay tribute to national hero who died for the country and as aspiring
source of Filipino character and patriotism. The law is to pay us reminder of all the
efforts that Rizal exerted during his time, he was excellent in using pen, and we must take
it from him the character he possessed to be able to be called as a Filipino.
3. Republic Act 1425 is indeed an effective way of character development, because it is
very clear on what were the insights of Rizal, his methods of protecting the country from
the tyranny of the Spaniards. It provides us with insights on how to deal with current
problems and studying Rizal as a subject would be an ingredient to an educated Filipino.
It helps us understand on what truly is being a Filipino. A person who is a master in his
past can control his future, thus it makes grasp on the idea on fighting for our freedom
and rights. The subject can also teach nationalism and patriotism to the youth by the
works that Rizal written like the Noli Me Tangere and the El Filibusterismo that were the
fuel of the Philippine Revolution in the past. The works of Rizal can be a source of life
lessons, through the decisions he made in life, his convictions, insights which manifest
how noble he was and willing sacrifice his life. Lastly, is that his works promote critical
thinking with the arguments he presented on fighting for freedom and not be a puppet in
the hands of foreign tyrants.
4. When the law was still at hearing it had set some controversies to the Catholic Church
wherein the church was triggered by the words used by the article “compulsion”. The
compulsion of reading was something against the Church because the Rizal’s works were
something against religion because of how vile and abusive the friars were before. The
Catholic Church has made a stand that the novels of Rizal are against the catholic faith
and its religious convictions. They opposed to what Rizal has written in his works like
how the church has protected heresy, and how his books were against the existence of
miracles and reading these novels, passages and writings will be a tool for anti Catholic
to use against them by the abuse and injustices they are trying hide and protect.
