One-Day Seminar on Blockchain Technology

The one day seminar on "Block Chain Technology" was held on August 17th, 2019 at AIET with 97 participants. The objective was to understand electronic money, bitcoin, and the software behind Bitcoin. Dr. Sandeep Kumar Panda facilitated sessions on introducing Blockchain technology, problems with centralized databases, and distributed networks. Participants learned what Blockchain is, its architecture, how it is implemented, and its features. Blockchain technology eliminates security issues faced with centralized systems by utilizing a decentralized database stored across thousands of nodes, making it difficult for hackers to compromise the entire system simultaneously.

Day-1

A blockchain is a growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography.
Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, a timestamp, and transaction
data. Blockchain has been in a lot of buzz these days. And that is mainly because it is backbone
of the very famous cryptocurrency in the world - the Bitcoin. Many Governments and leading
Banks have decided to bring many of their conventional transactions based on Blockchain
concept. The applications and potential of this framework is huge and is considered to be
changing the way transactions are made in various domains.
In recent years, there is a lot of buzz on Blockchain. Many have described this as a most
disruptive technology of the decade. Especially, the financial markets could be the most affected
ones.
The technology is being adapted into many verticals like Healthcare, Medicines, Insurance,
Smart Properties, Automobiles, and even Governments.
However, so far the most successful implementation of Blockchain is the Bitcoin - A Peer-to-
Peer Electronic Cash System, which incidentally is also the first implementation of blockchain
technology. Thus, to understand blockchain technology, it is best to understand how Bitcoin
System is designed and implemented.
This seminar we have learnt what is Blockchain, its architecture, how it is implemented and its
various features. The Author sited Bitcoin implementation while describing the intricacies of
blockchain.
The centralized authority, which in common terms is your bank, maintains a ledger book
recording all the transactions. Now, Bob has to send his digital money to the bank that would
make an entry into its ledger debiting Bob’s account. After ensuring that Bob has sufficient
balance to pay for the digital money which he wants to send, would send the money to Lisa
crediting her account in its ledger.
Now, it is guaranteed that Bob cannot double spend the money. If every digital transaction is
routed through a centralized authority like this, the problem of double-spending would be
solved. This also provides another benefit in validating the authenticity of each coin (digital
money) that it receives in the transaction. So the fake money (duplicate money as in the case of
Bob paying to Alice using a copy) would be easily detected and prevented from the circulation.
The introduction of centralized authority though it solves the double-spending problem,
introduces another major issue - the cost of creating and maintaining the centralized authority
itself.
As the banks need money for their operations, they start cutting commissions on each currency
transaction they do for their clients. This sometimes can become very expensive, especially in
overseas transfer of money where multiple agents (banks) may be involved in the entire deal.
All the above issues are solved by the introduction of digital currency, called Bit coin. I will
now give you a brief background on what Bit coin is before delving into its design and
architecture.
Content beyond Syllabus:

Security of assets and data has been a major threat over the years. Blockchain technology
eliminates the security issues faced in the centralized transaction systems because earlier in
centralized systems there was only one centralized database which everyone would rely upon.

If there was any malicious activity on that database then the whole system got corrupted and
hacked. As a result if by any chance there was no backup of the database, then it would result in
a huge loss.

Blockchain technology has decentralized database and thousands of copies of the same database
which is extremely difficult for hackers to hack at the same time.
Cybercrime is one of the major threats in the era of internet. It is a crime which involves a
computer and internet. It includes identity theft, transaction fraud, advance fee fraud, hacking,
piracy etc.

The blockchain technology ensures protection against the threats of cybercrime because of the
system in such a way that if an unauthorized person tries to makes any modification in the
decentralized database then it will be automatically discarded due to not matching of the chain of
existing blocks of information.

Blockchain gives users of internet the ability to create value and authenticate digital information.
The fields include:

 Finance – Best example is Bitcoin which is crypto currency and digital payment system
working on blockchain technology.
 Education – Educational institutions and their groups can use blockchain to securely store
badges, credits, qualifications and educational data making it available for a distinct
group of people.
 Public sector – In shipment, government organizations, taxation, smart contracts, Record
keeping, digital cheques.
 Farmers – To establish direct and transparent contact with the buyers. In conventional
system, farmers
 Personal Transactions – To transfer the money from one person to other. For example-
money from buyer to item seller will reach directly without any transaction fee taken by
the intermediaries.
 IT companies – in cloud storage and supply chain communications.
 Land title registration – It will be more secure and no one can make any illegal changes
in the documents to avoid conflicts.
 Stock trading
 Electronic voting – Voting is one of the most sensitive areas in any country. With the help
of blockchain voting will become safe and explicit.

Gaps identified:

Many programmers will and can become blockchain developers as those who know JavaScript
can easily learn solidity language which is a contract-oriented programming language to
write smart contracts on various blockchain platforms such as Ethereum.
So, it’s not like only the fresher’s can learn this technology, but for existing software developers
there is a very good chance for them to give their career a potential growth by getting inked with
the latest technology.

Bachelor of Technology in Blockchain is a four-year undergraduate programme that familiarizes

students with the functional and operational aspects of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. During the
tenure of this programme, students develop an understanding of the emerging abstract models for
Blockchain Technology.
The primary objective of this course is to identify significant research challenges and technical
gaps existing between theory and practice in crypto currency domain and to quickly configure a
new development platform to understand the applications of blockchain in cyber security, the
integrity of information, E-Governance and other contract enforcement mechanisms.
The curriculum of this programme is designed in such a way that students are exposed to the
Basic Cryptographic primitives used in block chain, Basic Distributed System concepts, Basic
Block chain concepts, Limitations of block chain as a technology, and myths vs. reality of block
chain technology and have an understanding and working knowledge of the emerging block
chain technology.
seek in-depth specialization in the fields of block chain technology, crypto currency and block
chain programming language. One can gain advanced and in-depth knowledge of Solidity
programming language, distributed ledger cloud platform, Ethereum and Bit coin crypto
currency and can exploit research using a very hands-on approach.
Students who are looking for...

a career with exceptional prospective fields and challenging roles in a futuristic industry. The
financial security, the freedom to relocate, lifelong prospects of learning makes this programme
an ideal career for computer science enthusiasts.
Reflections

A. The day Seminar helps to understand the basic Knowledge in digital money, use of bit coin
and its importance

i. It is valuable to know the aims & objectives of Programme. It helps the students

in gaining immense Knowledge in digital money

ii. For understanding this they should search various references such as centralized network,
distributed network, use of bit coin.

iii Practical approach to handle digital money in real world.

iv. Activities should be taken according to content for different level.

vii. Software that helps in improving them in using bit coin in some countries
B. After discussion students come to get was is block chain, its importance, software behind bit
coin and its affect

C. Duration of Seminar was good as per the content given.

D. Following things gained

Student got some idea about what is block chain technology, bit coin and its importance,
advantages and disadvantages. The topic that was covered was the enhancement in the subject of
Network security and cryptography of final year students which added a lot to their learning of
the advancements that are going on in the field of security and how to overcome the real world
problems and issues with respect to digital money. The speaker was able to give them the clear
idea about the type of networks maintained, controlling mechanism, security problems in
centralized maintenance of data bases, how they can be resolved, importance of digital money,
its drawback, security issues all were discussed by the speaker was very much important to the
students of outgoing batch because it gave them the idea of what the current issues that are going
on in real world and gave them a path to choose their career option
