500 — Terms and Abbreviations

Cabin CAN—A proprietary datalink connecting certain ECUs on the vehicle, specifically the CGW, MSF, SAM
Cab and SAM Chassis.
CAN—Controller Area Network
CAN ID—The identifier for a specific message, which also contains the source address of the sending ECU
communicating on the J1939 datalink.
CGW—Central Gateway
Datalink—A collection of wires, connecting system components, through which data is transmitted.
Diagnostic CAN—Datalink that runs from the diagnostic connector to the CGW.
ECU— Electronic Control Unit, typically connected to a datalink.
Multiplexing—Sending multiple electronic messages through the same signal path at the same time—in this
case, through the CAN buses.
SAM—Signal Detect and Actuation Module
SAM Cab—Signal Detect and Actuation Module Cab ("SAM Cabin"); this ECU controls mainly cab-related func-
tionality. See G02.04 — SAM Cab for more information.

501 — General Information

The audio system includes the antenna, satellite antenna, antenna multiplexer, radio head unit, speakers, and
wiring. The radio head unit is located on the dash in the B-Panel. The front speakers are located in the driver
and passenger doors. The SAM Cab provides BAT and GND to the radio from connector X3 on pins 11 and 19.

502 — Premium Speaker System

The premium speaker system, available in the raised roof sleeper cab, has speakers mounted in the sleeper roof
halo above the upper bunk. There is a subwoofer mounted below the lower bunk. On the sleeper control panel
there is a bunk sleeper shut off sub bus switch to turn off the rear speakers and the subwoofer.

503 — Premium radios

There are two premium radios available for the Cascadia, the Freightliner premium radio (746-1AG), which
requires the premium speaker system to be installed, and the Delphi premium radio (746–1AN). The Delphi pre-
mium radio is connected to the J1939 datalink for additional troubleshooting capabilities. It is connected to the
J1939 datalink through pins 3 (J1939+) and 4 (J1939–) on the radio connector. The Delphi premium radio also
requires a digital satellite audio antenna (78C-003) for XM satellite radio service. The antenna is mounted be-
hind the vehicle dash, and feeds up the right-hand A-Pillar and is mounted behind the center storage bin above
the vehicle dash.

703 — Output Troubleshooting (front and rear speakers)

1. Check the voltage at the radio connectors.
If there is no sound coming from the speakers, first make sure that the fader, balance, and volume control is
properly adjusted. For units with rear speakers, adjust the radio settings to output audio to the rear speak-
ers (adjust 2-speaker mode to 4-speaker mode). Make sure that the sleeper mute button is not open.
1.1 Turn on the radio and tune it to a station with clear sound.
1.2 Adjust the fader and balance to isolate each speaker, and verify that they are working.
1.3 Check the following terminal pairs for the suspect speaker:
• Radio connector 9, 10 (front left)
• Radio connector 5, 6 (front right)
• Radio connector 13, 14 (rear left)

NOTE: If the battery level is too low, the LVD functionality will shut off the amplifier power. Ensure the bat-
tery is charged to avoid LVD behavior.
YES! Perform a continuity test between SAM Cab connector X3.9 and subwoofer connector pin 2. Repair
the affected harness if continuity is not found.
NO ! Check if fuse F9 is blown and replace as necessary. If fuse F9 is not blown, verify the starter inter-
locks are met for the SAM Cab to activate the amplifier power. Ssee 702 — Radio Does Not Shut Off,
step 4 and 5. If the starter interlocks have been met, replace relay 9.

YES! Check the speaker leads and repair or replace as necessary.
NO ! Replace the speaker.

705 — Poor Reception with RAMI Antenna

1. Perform a whip antenna test.
1.1 Remove the antenna from the bracket on the side of the vehicle.

Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, March 2013 C03.01/9

C03.01 Audio System

1.2 Verify that each whip antenna has a good connection/solder joint at the ferrule end of the antenna.
1.3 Remove the antenna cap. If required, make a small cut in the heat shrink to expose the wire. Do not
allow the wire to come out of the slot and uncoil.
NOTE: The wire is coated with an insulting material. Before performing a continuity test, if required,
lightly sand the coiled wire end to expose a small "uncoated" portion near the tip of the antenna.
1.4 Using the multimeter, measure for continuity on the antenna ferrule to the tip of the coiled wire at the
opposite end of the antenna. Twist and flex the bottom portion of the antenna to make sure there is
not an intermittent break.
Is there low resistance?

NO ! Replace the whip antenna.
2. Troubleshoot the antenna brackets.
2.1 Check for a good grounding from the antenna brackets to the chassis ground.
2.2 Remove the radio from the dash.
2.3 Remove the AM/FM antenna from the back of the radio.
2.4 Remove the plastic cover from the antenna bracket.
2.5 Connect one probe of the multimeter to the chassis ground and touch the other probe to the an-
tenna bracket.
2.6 Measure for continuity.
Is there low resistance?
YES! Go to test 3.
NO ! Repair the bracket as necessary. Check all connections from the bracket to the chassis ground.
Look for corrosion that may be building around the bracket.
3. Troubleshoot the cable assembly.
3.1 Remove the bracket from the cab wall.
3.2 Remove the mounting base from the bracket and unscrew the antenna cable from the base.
3.3 Perform the following continuity tests with the antenna cable and the AM/FM cable:
• Connect one probe of the multimeter to the outer connector of the antenna cable. Touch the
other probe to the outer connector of the AM/FM cable. There should be continuity.
• Remove the probe from the outer connector of the AM/FM cable. Touch the probe to the cen-
ter conductor of the AM/FM cable. There should be no continuity.
• Remove the probe from the outer connector of the antenna cable. Touch the probe to the cen-
ter conductor of the antenna cable. There should be continuity.
Do any of the tests fail?
YES ! Look at the cables from the multiplexer box out to the brackets. Look for damage, such as pinched
or crushed cables. Check the connections to the dash harness at the cable break, and make sure the con-
nections are secure.

C03.01/10 Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, March 2013

Audio System C03.01

NO ! Go to test 4.

YES! Replace the multiplexer box
NO ! Continue troubleshooting. Search for corroded connectors and pinched cables. Install a test multi-
plexer box to verify results.
