Process Instrumentation Tutorial 1

This document contains a tutorial for a process instrumentation course. It includes 5 problems: 1) calculating the water level that will stabilize a tank's inflow and outflow, 2) converting between temperature and electrical current, 3) calculating temperatures that will turn a heater and cooler on/off, 4) converting a water level to 4-bit digital code and back, and 5) drawing a process control diagram for a manufacturing system.

1) The tank in Figure 1 has a
relationship between flow and level
given by Qiyt  K h , where h is the
level of water and K is a
constant 10(l / min) / m1 / 2 . Suppose the
input flow is 15 l/min. At what level h
of h will the level stabilize from self- H
regulation? Qout

2) Suppose the temperature range 20 C to 120 C is linearly converted to the standard current
range of 4 to 20 mA.
(i) What current will result from 66 C?
(ii) What temperature does 6.5 mA represent?

amplifier has a gain of 10, the Vref
reference is 3 V, and the
sensor outputs 150 mV/C.

4) Suppose each bit change in a 4-bit ADC represents a level of 0.15 m.

(i) What would the 4 bits be for a level of 1.7 m?
(ii) Suppose the 4 bits were 10002, what is the range of possible levels?

5) Figure 3 shows a manufacturing process diagram. Using the P&ID symbols, draw a process-
control diagram of the system.
