Engineering Design Optimization Basics

This document provides an introduction to engineering design optimization. It discusses how optimization can help generate improved designs through a scientific approach rather than trial and error. Design optimization involves determining parameters that lead to the best system performance under given conditions. The key components are design variables, objectives or objective functions to optimize, and design constraints. An example is given of optimizing a coffee mug design to minimize weight while meeting constraints like volume, insulation, and durability. Different types of design optimization problems are classified based on variable types, relationships, and presence of constraints.

Design Optimization
Design
Optimization
Design- determining certain parameters of a product or system that
leads to its desired performance under given conditions.
Optimization- finding the best result under given circumstances.
Design Optimization- determining certain parameters of a product or
system that leads to its the best performance under given conditions

Components of design optimization
Variables that affect the design
Constituents of product specification
Adjustable for optimization purpose
Bounded by maximum and minimum values.
Design variables :
One or more performance index to be optimized (minimized or maximized)
Criterion to distinguish superior designs.
Objectives/ Objective functions
One or more requirements to be satisfied for feasible design.
Design Constraints
Consider design of a coffee mug with minimal material.
design optimization problem will be formulated as-
Parameters to determine : mug dimensions, material
Performance to minimize : mug weight
Constraints:
should hold certain volume of coffee,
should keep the coffee hot,
should withstand hot material
