SAFETY TIPS: 5S
METHODOLOGY
WHAT IS 5S?
The 5S was developed in Japan in the 1950s,
after World War II.

• It was used by Japanese companies,

especially in the Toyota Production System.
• Its purpose is to promote order, cleanliness,
and efficient work.
5S Methodology is divided into 5 procedures
(cycle):
1. SORTING(SIERE)
Sorting (called Seiri in Japanese) is
the first step. It means separating
what is needed from what is not
needed in the workplace and removing
unnecessary items. The goal is to
keep only essential items to make the
workspace organized, efficient, and
safe.
• Keep what you use regularly.
• Remove what is rarely or never used.
2. SET IN ORDER (SEITON)

Arranging items so they are

easy to find, use, and return.

Example: Label drawers for

pencils, markers, and scissors so
everyone knows where to get and
put them back.
3. SHINE (SEISO)

Keeping the workplace clean and

tidy at all times to prevent dirt and
clutter.

Example: Wipe desks and clean the

floor at the end of the day.
4. STANDARDIZE (SEIKETSU)
Creating rules and procedures so
the first three S’s are maintained
consistently.
Example: Post signs showing
where materials belong and have a
daily cleaning routine.
5. SUSTAIN (SHITSUKE)

Making 5S a habit and following

the rules every day without
reminders.
Example: Students always
return supplies to their proper
place and clean up after
themselves automatically.

the workplace?

not followed in the workplace?
