Tank Volume Calculation for Shutdown

This document provides two examples of calculating the volume of an air tank (V1) needed to operate a shutdown valve actuator. Both examples use the known volume of the actuator (V2), initial and final pressures (P1 and P2), an adiabatic index of 1.4 for instrument air, and require the tank volume to supply air 3 times to the actuator. The calculated tank volumes for the first and second examples are 47.21 liters and 33.93 liters, respectively.

Example,
Known variables:
- V2 = 300 in3
- P1 = 95.3 psig
- P2 = 65.3 psig
- Adiabatic index = 1.4 (for instrument air)
- x = 3 times
V1 = (3*300/((95.3/65.3)^(1/1.4)-1))
V1= 2903.66 in3 = 47.21 liter

Example,
Known variables:
- V2 = 570 in3
- P1 = 116.22 psig (7 Bar)
- P2 = 50.25 psig (2 Bar) (Minimum air pressure required for actuator)
- Adiabatic index = 1.4 (for instrument air)
- x = 3 times
V1 = (3*570/((116.22/50.25)^(1/1.4)-1))
V1= 2085.024 in3 = 33.93 liter
