Summer grasses grow On brave warriors' splendid dreams The after glow comes

The warrior has died and though his dreams are buried with him, the warrior and his dreams will live again. the warrior is buried under the grass. This warrior once had dreams for the future but was killed before they could be fulfilled. There's a certain irony in the use of the word afterglow. The warrior can't actually experience it because he's dead: probably killed in battle.

Marks Interpretation: It is the zen of a natural moment. It is the sounds of nature that we ignore unless they suddenly break the silence; a reminder that we are surrounded by life.

Robert Hass -on a leafless branch a crow comes to nest - autumn nightfall Haruo Shirane Interpretation: the image is not that of a crow landing on a branch, but the quiet calm of the dark bird just perching there after settling. The transference is realized not only by the characteristic "dark, black" but also by the verb which means "land" and "fall" (for dusk) at the same time. It is pointed out, of course, that the crow and the late autumn are associated with death - a deeper connection.
