What a horrible, soulless movie. Bullock, Kidman and Channing all look strange and can’t act through whatever it is they have done to their faces. Not to mention the enhancements and filters used in post. I loved the first Practical Magic even though it took departures from the book, but instead of the beautiful way The Book of Magic tells the story of her grief, this script takes every lesson Sally learned and back slides. She’s just afraid and selfish and angry. Kidman behaves like a clown, so Gilly is nothing more than a silly sidekick. And they are both very greedy with screen time. Countless scenes with the two of them trying to remind us how lovable the first movie was and how adorable they are, so we never get a chance to learn anything about the other characters. Kylie and her boyfriend’s storyline felt rushed so there is no emotional payoff at all. Antonia is a completely thankless role, as is Ian. And you knew who the villain was the moment he spoke because too little time was left to explore backstory. Just. No. I’m done. I’d rather cuddle up on my couch and read a book instead.
