Kalyani Expressway is a 4 to 6-lane signal-free expressway. The stretch from Belgharia to Muragacha is 6-lane, while Muragacha to Kalyani is 4-lane. It is managed by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). It runs parallel to the National Highway 34, providing a convenient alternative route for locals and visitors.
It is the fastest way for commuters to travel from Kalyani to Kolkata or vice versa. Since its inception, the highway has significantly improved the trade in these cities, paving the way for urban developments.

About Kalyani Expressway
The Kalyani-Barrackpore Expressway, initially constructed in the 1980s, spanned 35 kilometres. Later, an extension of 9 kilometres was added, stretching from the Sodepur road to Barasat. In 2005, this expanded section was opened for general public usage. Later on, KMDA was handed over the responsibility of managing the highway.
The expressway runs from Kalyani to Nimta in the 24-Parganas (N) district. It is a vital route connecting the suburbs to the city. This portion has recently been converted into a four-lane motorway and was inaugurated on 02nd March 2026. The expressway also decreases the travel time from Kolkata airport to Kalyani.

New Features of Kalyani Expressway

21 New Flyovers: The project includes nearly 24 km of elevated sections. These flyovers help make the road ‘signal-free.’ Commuters can now drive from the Belgharia end all the way to the northern outskirts without hitting a single red light. It’s a straight shot that feels more like a flight than a drive.

The ‘Zero Point’ Elevated Link: This is probably the smartest part of the design. There’s a new 1.5-km elevated connector at North Dum Dum. Kalyani Expressway Route Map
The Kalyani Expressway runs from Nimta to Kalyani inside the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. It intersects state highways 1 and 2, offering vital links along the way. Furthermore, the motorway connects to National Highway-12 at several spots, increasing connectivity.
The Ishwar Gupta Setu, a famous bridge, connects the Kalyani Motorway and State Highway-6. This results in seamless transit and regional connectivity. The KMDA has now been converting to a 6-lane road up to Muragacha and a 4-lane road from Muragacha to Kalyani.
Land acquisition is complete, and building is in full gear. In addition, an elevated corridor connecting the road to the Belghoria Motorway is being built.
