    What if an online course didn’t just teach innovation but operated like a product studio? That’s the design ethos behind New Product Development, a fully asynchronous course I am developing within the Master of Business Management at the University of Auckland. It’s not just about learning innovation theory. It’s about practising innovation as a way of learning and doing so in a way that fits the realities of working professionals. The course unfolds through six studio sprints, each aligned with a real-world product development stage: 🔹Framing opportunities 🔹Discovering unmet needs 🔹Designing value 🔹Building prototypes 🔹Go to market strategy 🔹a final innovation portfolio and pitch Every sprint includes hands-on toolkits, reflection prompts, and optional peer critique. Assessments are artefacts: opportunity maps, personas, low-fidelity prototypes, validation plans, and strategic pitches. These artefacts mirror what students might produce in a product team, innovation unit, or consultancy. But what makes this possible online? I’ve reconceived Canvas LMS not as a content repository but as a virtual studio: 🔹Sprint dashboards replace linear modules. 🔹Toolkits and templates scaffold creative work. 🔹Discussions become “crit walls” for sharing work-in-progress. 🔹Reflection journals trace how students make decisions in uncertain contexts. The pedagogy draws from studio-based learning, design thinking, and agile methodologies but adapted for asynchronous learners. This means no Zoom fatigue, no live workshops, and no assuming everyone’s working on the same schedule. Instead, students build momentum through iterative, flexible engagement directly tied to their own industries, roles, and contexts. Why does this matter? Because the students in this course are not full-time students—they are full-time professionals. Product managers, consultants, public servants, engineers, and social innovators. For them, learning must integrate into the flow of work, not interrupt it. Studio pedagogy allows that. It invites them to explore workplace-relevant challenges, use generative AI ethically and creatively, and produce outputs that can feed back into their own projects. It’s one thing to talk about lifelong learning. It’s another to build courses that make it practical, applied, and meaningful. That’s the promise of studio-based, asynchronous design.     I had bookmarked over 100 tutorials on automation. Never opened a single one. Then in one week, I learned Make, Typeform, Carrd, Airtable, and Softr—and tied them all together. What changed?  I had a project to build. Most of us try to learn tools in isolation. We watch courses. We follow tutorials. We bookmark resources we’ll never revisit. But tools don't make sense in a vacuum. You can't learn how to connect five different platforms by studying them one at a time. That's where project-based learning changes everything. When you have something real to build, the tools stop being abstract concepts. They become solutions to specific problems you need to solve right now. Here's why project-based learning is the fastest way to master new tools, or indeed, new subjects: 1: Projects give you a clear finish line. - Without a project, you'll wander down every rabbit hole. - With a project, you learn exactly what you need—nothing more. - The goal pulls you forward when curiosity tries to pull you sideways. Clarity comes from constraints, not endless possibilities. 2: Projects force you to connect the dots between tools. This is where the real learning happens. Make handles automation. Typeform captures input. Airtable organizes data. Softr turns it into an app. Carrd builds the landing page. Alone, each tool is interesting. Together, they solve a problem you couldn't solve before. Project-based learning doesn't just teach you tools. It teaches you how to tie them together into something that works. 3: Projects compress your learning curve dramatically. - I bookmarked 100+ tutorials and learned nothing. - One real project taught me five tools in seven days. - Theory builds confidence. Projects build competence. You don't learn to swim by reading about water. 4: Projects teach you what theory never will. Courses teach you features. Projects teach you decisions. Should you automate this step or do it manually? Which tool fits best here? How do you troubleshoot when two platforms won't talk to each other? These are questions you only encounter when you're building something real. I finished 80% of my project in one all-nighter. Then I spent four days stuck on the last 20%. That struggle taught me more than any tutorial ever could. 5: The best learning project is one you care about. - Pick something you want to exist. - Make it small enough to finish in a week. - Make it real enough to push through when it gets hard.     Odisha shows the country what happens when learning moves beyond the classroom and textbooks—into real life.   Guess what? In a pilot program across 80 government-run schools, over 11,000 tribal students were introduced to project-based learning—yes, learning by doing. From recording the daily routines of local weavers to huddling over handmade charts of village haats—stalls, prices, and timings sketched in rich detail—it was learning rooted in real life.  — and the results were powerful: 📚 53% improvement in Odia literacy 📚 +70% improvement in social sciences between two summative assessments  📚 87% of teachers reported a positive shift in student engagement and learning  This wasn't just an “intervention.” It was an invitation — for learners to lead, apply, explore, and engage with the world around them. As someone, who is deeply engaged in experiential youth oriented education experience, this reinforces what many grassroot educators and changemakers already know When learning is local, participatory, and purpose-driven, it transforms lives.     If we want teachers to design learning that's real-world, meaningful and hands-on, we need to radically re-think Professional Development for teachers. Here are 3 ideas to shake-up your PD in August before school starts: #1: For real-world connection: Partner with 3-4 non-profit groups in your community. For a 1/2 day, send your teachers out. Have them volunteer with the groups. Learn what they're about and build relationships. For the 1/2 half, teachers create a presentation for their colleagues about how the organisation could be integrated into project-design, exhibition spaces or learning experiences for kids. Outcome: knowledge of local organizations combating local issues. Contact people within these organizations. Easier real-world integration learning. BONUS: Invite guests from other local community organizations during your ongoing PD over the year to give 1 hour presentations about their mission and what they do. #2: For subject-relevance: Partner with local companies that are integrating academic learning into what they do. Send your English teachers to a publishing company or the local newspaper. Send your science teachers to the bio-tech company in the next town. Send your math teachers to visit engineers. Use 1/2 the day to visit these places, talk about the real processes they use academic learning in. For the 1/2 have of the day, teachers work in their subject groups to dive deep into how their subjects can be connected to real careers in project design. Outcome: experience for how subject learning is used in content and processes outside of school. Relationships with professionals who can be experts for kids, projects that support kids to become writers, scientists, mathematicians, engineers, etc. #3: For MAKING: Use what teachers have planned for the first project of the year and spend 1/2 of the day having your teachers MAKE the product they want their students to make. Want kids to make a film? Go out and make a film. Portrait drawing? Draw it. Use 1/2 of the day de-constructing the making process. What steps are necessary? What supports are necessary for kids? Use this experience to help understand better planning for Project-Based Learning. Outcome: More scaffolding for kids in the making process. Creating frames to give freedom and allowing for more student-driven work that is high-quality and integrating a "learning by doing" experience in PBL. BONUS: Make this a regular part of project planning. From the wise words of Jeffrey Robin: Do the project yourself, first. Basically, get teachers OUT. Move PD from academic learning and into experiential learning. We cannot expect teaching for kids to change unless we change how teachers are learning. Need help?     Back in 2017, my team had a simple but powerful ritual. We held "I have a design challenge" meetings, where someone would bring a project they were working on, and we’d workshop it together. These sessions weren’t just about fixing problems. They helped us grow our skills as a team and learn from each other’s perspectives. In 2024, I wanted to bring that same energy to learning designers looking to level up their skills in a fun and engaging way. This time, I turned to Tim Slade’s eLearning Challenges but took a different approach. Instead of just participating, we started doing live reviews of the challenge winners. How It Works One person drives the meeting, screensharing the challenge winner’s eLearning project while recording the session. We pause at each screen and ask two simple but high-impact questions: ✅ What worked well and why? ✅ What would you do differently and why? This sparks rich discussions on everything from instructional design and accessibility to visual design and interactivity. Everyone brings their unique expertise, turning the meeting into a collaborative learning experience. Want to Try It? Here’s What You Need ✔️ A web conferencing tool with recording capabilities ✔️ Adobe Premiere Pro or a transcript tool (optional, but helpful) ✔️ A generative AI tool like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude (optional for extracting themes from discussions) After the session, we take the recording and import it into Adobe Premiere, which generates a transcript in seconds. Then, using GenAI, we pull key themes, quotes, and takeaways, turning raw discussions into actionable insights. Why This Works This approach takes learning from passive to interactive. You’re not just seeing best practices. You’re critically analyzing them with peers, learning through feedback, and refining your own instructional design instincts. Would you try this with your team?     Since 2022, China has been quietly rolling out a nationwide pilot programme to reimagine engineering education from the ground up. Backed by the Ministry of Education and eight other key agencies, the initiative targets 18 strategically vital fields – from semiconductors to quantum computing. Instead of writing papers, students collaborate directly with leading enterprises and national labs to develop new equipment, design next-gen systems and innovate under pressure. The programme proposed that students could substitute their degree theses with major engineering designs, new product development or the creation of a novel apparatus – a provision that was enshrined in law two years later in 2024.

    Pew found half of Americans feel more concerned than excited about AI, and only about one in ten feel more excited than concerned. That same caution shows up inside organizations. You can push back by changing the learning format. Bring people together for a short sprint. Give teams governed data and clear workflows. Require a working demo at the finish line, presented to executive judges. Active learning research keeps landing on the same lesson: people learn faster when they solve real problems. Project based learning reinforces it, because building an artifact turns concepts into skill. ASNT (The American Society for Nondestructive Testing) proved the format in public with an AI Agent Battle at its 2025 annual conference. Members built AI agents tied to real nondestructive testing tasks, iterated in the open, and shipped on a deadline. ASNT’s COO described the event as members building innovation that connects directly to practice, with deeper engagement across the community. Leaders who want real adoption stage a build, coach the teams, govern the data, and make the demos visible. That is how AI moves from a concerning curiosity to operating leverage.

    Here’s the game plan for disrupting the transactional model of education. First, I’ve been researching and writing a lot about this model of education. These are its essential moves. 1️⃣ Students create educational products. 2️⃣ Students trade in those products for grades. 3️⃣ Students trade in those grades for degrees and certificates. 4️⃣ Students trade in those degrees and certificates for jobs. I’m only going to focus on 1 and 2, because those are in my immediate focus. So, here’s the plan. ***** 1. Attack the idea behind educational products. Design assignments that privilege process as much as process. This means no one-and-done and two-and-one assignments. Lean towards process-folios, Project-Based Learning assignments that document process, and regular reflection. Redesign assessment around this ideas. Assess clusters (which include a multi-step process) rather than single assignments. —— 2. De-emphasize points and percentages Use Specifications grading instead of traditional grading. This means setting a baseline for achieving a B, based on work and effort. Assignments will be assessed on a Complete/Incomplete system, encouraging students to try again as they practice skills. Students will also regularly self-assess, and that self-assessment will be the foundation of our conversation about what they’ve learned.
