A good example of why “technically accessible” does not always mean “cognitively accessible.” These settings controls appear fully active, focusable and styled as enabled. But attempting to change the temperature setting triggers a message requiring “functional cookies” to be enabled first. The issue is the hidden dependency. Users must understand: 1. Why a temperature preference depends on cookies 2. What “functional cookies” means 3. Where to change that setting 4. How to return and retry the task For many users, especially people with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, cognitive fatigue or low digital confidence this can disrupt the mental model completely. The interface communicates "You can change this." Whilst system behaviour communicates "Not unless you already understood an unrelated technical requirement." That creates friction right there! There is also an emotional accessibility consideration here. The strong red warning colour and alert styling communicates danger, failure and critical error ….but the user has done nothing wrong. At COGAI®, I often talk about the fact that emotional load is part of cognitive load. Colour alone is rarely an efficient or sufficient UI signal, particularly when the colour itself may increase anxiety or imply user failure rather than guidance. A system can satisfy technical WCAG requirements while still creating confusion, hesitation and abandonment through interaction design alone. Accessibility is not only about whether users can interact. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 Your change review board approved a design change six months ago. Today, a similar problem has surfaced in a different product line. Nobody remembers why the original solution was chosen over two viable alternatives. The decision was documented. The rationale was not. This is not a documentation problem. It is a knowledge architecture problem. Research on design rationale has shown for decades that capturing the “why” behind decisions is critical for reuse and learning. Yet it rarely happens, because documenting rationale is intrusive, time-consuming, and disconnected from how engineers actually work. The real cost is compounding. New hires spend roughly 200 hours working inefficiently because contextual knowledge was never captured. Boeing’s experience in the 2010s demonstrated what happens when institutional memory erodes: integration failures on the 787 traced back to process knowledge that existed in people’s heads but never made it into retrievable records. This is where AI scaffolding changes the equation. Not AI generating rationale after the fact. AI captures it as a byproduct of the work itself. In an AI-assisted impact analysis, the engineer and the AI walk through a product structure together, level by level. At each step, the AI surfaces a dependency and explains why it matters. The engineer confirms, rejects, or redirects. That interactive exchange is itself the rationale record. The “why” is captured not because someone stopped to write it down, but because the process required articulating it. CM2’s closed-loop change process provides the structure that makes this work. The change objects, the baselines, the impact matrices, these are not just governance artifacts. They are the scaffolding that gives AI a consistent framework to interact with. Without that structure, you get a conversation. With it, you get a traceable decision record. The INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook states that decisions should be documented using digital engineering artifacts, including the analysis, decisions, and rationale for historical traceability and future decisions. CM2 operationalizes this by defining exactly where in the change process those decisions live and who owns them. Standing in front of Notre-Dame d'Amiens, it becomes obvious how thin our idea of “innovation” has become. This façade is not the result of a concept slide or a parametric script. It is the outcome of centuries of accumulated knowledge: proportion, structure, light, material, symbolism, and craft. All of it transmitted patiently from one generation to the next, from practionner to practioner. Many designers today believe that history is optional. That architecture begins with software, trends, or “disruption.” It doesn’t. Without historical grounding, design becomes shallow imitation, good at producing images, poor at producing meaning. Studying architectural history is not nostalgia. It is literacy. It teaches constraints, hierarchy, tectonics, and intention. It shows how buildings respond to climate, structure, ritual, and time, long before these became buzzwords.

Automatic doors are not a luxury. They are dignity in motion. We often think automatic door openers are for people who use wheelchairs. Yes, they matter deeply and they matter to many more of us than we may realize. Placement of the button to push, matters. When it is placed where someone needs to get close to the door it does not allow enough time for everyone to move out of the way of the opening door. The standard round button works for some. The longer vertical button allows someone to press it with a knee or the side of a mobility device. If a person cannot reach either, sensors positioned at standing height and at ankle height allow someone to roll through or simply sweep a foot or wave a hand to activate the door. Colour contrast matters. A grey button on a grey wall disappears. Timing matters. Once a door opens, it must stay open long enough for someone using a mobility device, walker or scooter to move through safely. Not all mobility devices are the same size. For people who are plus size and using a bariatric chair or customized larger power chair, the door needs to be wide enough to support everyone passing through it. Space and patience must be built into design. Transitions matter. A raised threshold or lip at the entrance becomes a barrier. A smooth transition from outside to inside creates access without struggle. Automatic doors support seniors and individuals who may have reduced strength or balance. They support parents carrying babies or pushing strollers. They support delivery drivers carrying boxes or managing dollies. They support someone on crutches after surgery or using a support cane. They support the coworker carrying six coffees back to the office. While considering automatic door accessibility it is also important to look at other features of the door itself. A black handle on a black frame blends in. Clear colour contrast allows people with low vision to find the handle and use the door independently. Glass doors need visible markings or frosting so they are recognized as doors, not open space. Accessibility benefits everyone and hurts no one. When we design with intention, we remove barriers before someone has to ask. That is what true inclusion looks like. Having a disability does not change who we are, it changes our interactions with the world. That "clean, minimal" form design you're proud of? Some of your users can't see it at all. Light gray borders on white backgrounds. Subtle focus indicators. Ghost buttons with barely-there outlines. These design choices look sleek to you, but they're completely invisible to people with low vision, color blindness, or anyone squinting at their phone in bright sunlight. WCAG 1.4.11 (Non-text Contrast) exists because if someone can't see where to click, focus, or type, your design isn't minimal - it's missing. Liquid Glass is beautiful, but is it practical, at least on flat screens? Early reactions to Apple’s new design language have been polarizing, and rightly so. For everyday mobile tasks, Liquid Glass often feels overengineered. Layers of translucency, ambient reflections, and soft depth cues might look great in a keynote, but in practice, they can introduce visual noise where clarity should come first. That said, there’s a side to this story that’s not getting enough attention: 👉 What this new visual language gets right for accessibility and special needs. Some underappreciated wins: ✨ Consistent Spatial Hierarchy: The depth and layering (when done well) actually help users orient themselves better within multitasking UI and modals. 🔘 Focus and Feedback: Soft glows and motion states create more tactile visual feedback, which can be meaningful for users with motor or cognitive challenges. 👁️ Gentler Form Language: Rounded edges, soft shadows, and fluid surfaces reduce harshness — easier on the eyes, especially for neurodivergent users. ⚙️ Respect for System-Wide Settings: Text size, boldness, contrast, and reduced motion all still work seamlessly — a nod to Apple’s accessibility roots. When Touch Becomes Vision: What Blind People Taught Us About Art In a study co-authored with Sara Uboldi, Alessandro Bortolotti, Giulia Candeloro, Alessandra Marasco, Federico Sardella and Maria Tartari and published in Culture, Medicine, and Psychiatry, twenty-one people who lost their sight as adults were invited to explore a specially created artwork using only their hands. What happened next opened up a new world of possibility to us. The piece, Enrico Castellani's "Pseudo-Braille Surface", looks like a canvas covered in small, uniform bumps. No colors, no recognizable shapes. For most of us, it might seem like the least accessible artwork imaginable. But something remarkable emerged from the interviews with participants about their one-to-one experience with the artwork. At first, many felt frustrated, even inadequate. They were trying to "read" the artwork like a map or identify familiar objects—the way they'd been taught to navigate the world through touch to ‘help’ them cope with their acquired ‘sensory deprivation’. Then something shifted. Instead of asking "what is this supposed to be?" they started asking "what does this make me feel?" The bumps became mountain ranges from childhood hikes. Ocean waves from forgotten beach days. The texture of their mother's favorite shoes. Constellations in a night sky they remembered from before losing their sight. This wasn't compensation or imagination filling gaps. This was a different kind of seeing altogether, one that moved from practical recognition to pure aesthetic experience. And with that shift came something unexpected: profound emotional well-being. Technically, what happened was a "meta-cognitive shift": moving from functional touch to aesthetic touch. But it’s also something simpler and more profound: it's about giving ourselves permission to experience art on our own terms, rather than the terms we think we should. The implications stretch far beyond accessibility. In our hypervisual world, maybe we've forgotten that art isn't just about what we see: it's about what we feel, remember, and imagine. And feeling, remembering, and imagining are incredibly important for us and for a life worth living. These participants didn't experience less art because they couldn't see it. They experienced different art. Richer art, in some ways. Museums and galleries take note: true accessibility isn't just about adding audio descriptions or tactile tours. Data is only useful if it can be read In data visualization, we talk a lot about colorblind-friendliness, and rightly so. But there's another accessibility factor that's often overlooked: contrast. We often reduce contrast for non-data elements like titles, axis labels and comments. All with good intentions to let the data stand out. But if your labels are too faint, they become unreadable to many, defeating the purpose of adding them in the first place. There Are Standards for This: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define minimum contrast ratios between text and background to ensure readability: For normal text (<18 pt or 14 pt bold): minimum 4.5:1 For large text (≥18 pt or 14 pt bold): minimum 3:1 That means your soft grey axis label might look elegant to some, but stay invisible to others.
