Meet Jane Marie Chen, who used a design thinking approach to solve a $20B critical problem in rural India, saving the lives of thousands of infants. In rural Nepal and India, high infant mortality rates were alarming due to a lack of affordable and accessible incubators. Hospitals were struggling to provide life-saving warmth for premature and low-birth-weight babies. Jane Marie Chen and her team at Embrace Global saw a need for life-saving care in rural areas that couldnāt be ignored. Driven to make a difference, they turned to design thinking to reimagine a solution that could save lives. They developed an affordable, sleeping bag-like infant warmer called āEmbrace infant warmerā that operates without electricity. Using a paraffin-based pouch maintains a steady temperature, ensuring newborns in remote areas can survive. They have saved more than 700,000 lives across 20 countries since its launch in 2011. Seriously, I get this question so often when talking to software vendors: āI'd love to use our skills for good, but what do we get if we get involved?ā Thereās a lot to say āĀ building a portfolio, go-to-market strategies, retaining talent. Bad ideas donāt kill innovation. Rigid cultures do. Someone proposed a small fix in a routine process. It cut errors, made work smoother, reduced stress. The team adopted it. It worked. But because it didnāt come from the āright level,ā it was brushed aside. The change stayed. The credit didnāt. And the person behind it never spoke up again. Not because the idea was wrong, but because the culture wasnāt ready. Change isnāt about more ideas, itās about reshaping culture itself. So what does that look like in practice? 1ļøā£ Reward questions,Ā not just solutions Innovation doesnāt begin with a polished pitch. It begins when someone dares to ask: āWhy are we still doing it this way?ā 2ļøā£ Make failure boring If every test must succeed, no one will try. Normalize small, fast, safe failures ,Ā momentum builds without blame. 3ļøā£ Remove the need for permission Good ideas die when they need five layers of sign-off. Trust creates velocity. Embedding these into an existing culture is never easy. One way forward is to create safe spaces where people can test, learn, and adapt without red tape. Thatās exactly what Design4Impact (D4I) set out to do,Ā not just talk about culture, but build it in practice. D4I launched in 2020, in the middle of COVID-19 to bring health, social, and design for good together. And it grew into a national platform that empowered communities with tools and trust to co-create solutions. In 5 years, D4I: šø Trained 500+ participants in design thinking šø Ran 3 national design challenges šø Launched 9 pilots, from tackling mental health to helping caregivers feel less alone I was blessed to serve on the organizing committee, and to witness firsthand how trust, not hierarchy, unlocked real innovation. How can designers reshape the future through social innovation? Ā Imagine a community garden run by residents, schools, and small businesses, all working together to tackle food insecurity. Ā This isn't just a grassroots projectāit's a prime example of social innovation in action. Ā But what does this have to do with design? Ā Designers are uniquely positioned to drive social change. Ā At the heart of social innovation lies the idea of reframing both the problems we face and the way we solve them. Ā Itās about shifting focus from quick fixes to more holistic, inclusive solutions. And designers, with their emphasis on empathy and experimentation, have the tools to make this happen. Ā In the 1960s, Horst Rittel coined the term āwicked problemsā to describe challenges like poverty, inequality, and climate change. Ā These issues are complex, interconnected, and canāt be solved by one sector alone. Ā Thatās where cross-sector collaborationsābetween governments, businesses, and non-profitsācome in. But these collaborations require more than just good intentions. Ā They need design thinking. Ā Take human-centered design (HCD), a process championed by IDEO, which focuses on understanding the unique context of a problem, listening to the people affected, and then iterating solutions. Ā Itās not just about creating products or servicesāitās about truly understanding and responding to human needs. Ā When designers apply this empathy-driven approach to social problems, they become key players in creating sustainable, long-lasting solutions. Ā Weāre already seeing this shift. Ā According to a report by the World Economic Forum, businesses that incorporate social innovation into their strategies are 2.5 times more likely to lead industry transformation. Ā And design plays a huge role in this transformation. Ā So, Ā How can we as designers continue to push the boundaries of social innovation and create a sustainable future? Every summer, thousands of students sit in classrooms where extreme heat is part of the learning environment. For many government school students, the challenge is not focus. It is simply staying comfortable enough to learn. And every year, the problem gets worse. Rising temperatures. Limited access to cooling. High costs of traditional solutions. Communities that are already stretched are being hit the hardest. But six students from Delhi chose not to wait for a solution. They asked a different question. What if waste itself could help solve the problem? That question led to Project Vaayu. Using discarded kulhads, they designed low-cost, eco-friendly cooling systems for government school classrooms facing rising heat. The science behind it is simple. The porous clay absorbs water and allows it to evaporate gradually, naturally cooling the air around it. By repurposing discarded kulhads into cooling panels, the students created a sustainable cooling solution that requires minimal energy and low cost. What makes this idea powerful is not just the design. It is the thinking behind it. Waste turned into utility. Simplicity turned into impact. Sustainability built into the core, not added later. This is what real innovation looks like. Not complexity for the sake of innovation, but clarity for the sake of solving a real problem. From discarded clay cups to functional cooling systems.
