🇨🇱 The second most devastating fire in the world of this century occurred in the Valparaiso region of Chile, in the central core of our country. Profoundly sad, this catastrophe left more than 130 human casualties, with thousands of homes and huge areas of land destroyed. For our country, this devastation is the worst since the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule Earthquake 🚨Some days after the tragedy, one interesting case was observed, which should be seriously studied, refined, and spread to other communities by our authorities as a disaster management prevention example: The neighborhood of Botania survived the severe fires through a comprehensive community prevention project, with impressive positive outcomes, putting attention to specific aspects: 1️⃣ Training is the main key aspect. Different organizations mapped potential hazards and conducted drills to evaluate real time community response. 2️⃣ Water Reserves: Water tanks of with thousands of liters kept the environment moist to prevent fires, and have water to fire trucks, in case they were necessary 3️⃣Clearing Vegetation: Land around homes was cleared, especially during fire seasons. 4️⃣Safety Distance: The minimum distance between homes and vegetation was three times the height of the nearest tall tree, to protect homes from wind-carried embers and space for fire trucks. 5️⃣Garbage: Clearing roadside debris was crucial. Remember glass bottles can magnify sunlight and start fires. 6️⃣Cleaning of trunks: Removing foliage below two meters from the ground to prevent fire from climbing. 7️⃣Communications: Communication systems like walkie-talkies, in case phone signals fail during the emergency 8️⃣Drones: They help quickly detect small fires and track arsonists, enhancing early response and prevention efforts. 🙏🏽This is an example of resilience and community union that might help as a model for disaster awareness. Wildfire Insurance’s Quiet Opportunity People like to think wildfire risk is simple. Either you harden your house and hope for the best, or you wait for your neighbor to do it for you. But it’s never that clear cut. Data on fire losses clearly shows that defensible space, sealed vents, and a good roof make a real difference. Sometimes, what you do to your own house is enough to tip the odds. I know you've probably heard this before, but it’s not just about you. The homes around you, how close they are, and whether they’re hardened too—all these things matter. In the WUI, risk isn’t something you can fence in. It moves, and it’s contagious. What’s interesting is that insurance, for all its modeling, has mostly treated risk as if it stops at the property line. You get priced for your roof and your brush clearance, but not for what the community does together. That’s a missing feedback loop. Now, in places like Tahoe Donner, there’s a new approach: parametric wildfire insurance. Both individual upgrades and community-wide work—prescribed burns, thinning, fuel breaks—are measured and rewarded. When the neighborhood acts, the premium drops by 39%, and the deductible by 89%. It’s not a clever actuarial trick. It’s a way to reward the kinds of collective changes that actually matter. The radical part isn’t that individual action gets replaced. It’s that it gets compounded. When everyone hardens, risk and cost fall for all. Insurance starts to work at the scale where wildfire risk actually operates. Of course, neighborhoods are rarely perfect. There’s always someone whose idea of “defensible space” is, let’s say, generous. And organizing groups is hard. That’s why hardening your own home—vents, roofs, clear zones—still matters. It’s a belt and suspenders approach: your best odds come from doubling up, investing both in your own place and in your community. The difference now is insurance finally has a way to reward both. The future of wildfire resilience won’t be all solo or all collective. It’s going to be a little of each. Each wildfire event reminds us communities must prepare for the few days a year of dry hot winds — not the calm of everyday life. 🔥 When fires ignite on the worst days, these winds push embers, flames and heat into entire neighborhoods. But the science is clear – when communities work together, we can disrupt the path of conflagration. Today, the @Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety released our report from the field investigation of the Palisades and Eaton Fires. Findings point to a clear path forward: ➡️ A systems-based approach that combines resilient construction, strategic fuel management, and community-wide mitigation is essential for wildfire resilience. 🏠 When structure separation isn’t possible, homeowners must take key steps. The study found when homes featured 4 hardened components – a Class A roof, noncombustible siding, double-pane windows and enclosed eaves – the likelihood of avoiding wildfire damage was 54%, regardless of how close homes were to one another. 🏡 In contrast, homes with fuel covering more than 25% of Zone 0 faced an 87-100% chance of damage or destruction. That includes your trash can, the patio furniture and shrubs. A decade of science is clear: mitigations matter. Wildfire resilience is built long before the flames arrive. When wildfires threaten, firefighters employ a range of structure protection and defence tactics to safeguard homes and critical infrastructure. One of the most widely used methods is the creation of a “humidity bubble” around at-risk buildings. This involves deploying sprinklers in strategic positions to raise the relative humidity around a structure, making it harder for flying embers or burning debris to ignite combustible materials. These efforts are often supported by task forces and strike teams made up of fire engines, water tenders, and specialized equipment mobilized specifically to defend structures once the wildfire front is imminent. The tactics chosen depend on fire behaviour (wind, fuel type, slope, and weather conditions) and the vulnerability of the property itself. But while these emergency measures are critical, they cannot do the job alone. The foundation of wildfire protection is urban planning and community preparedness. Urban Planning: Land-use decisions such as setbacks between developments and wildland areas, roadway design for evacuation and fire access, and zoning requirements for defensible space are among the most powerful tools communities have to reduce wildfire risk. Incorporating wildfire hazard assessments into municipal planning ensures that neighbourhoods are designed with both fire suppression and resident safety in mind. Building Standards: Using fire-resistant roofing, siding, windows, and decking materials dramatically improves the survivability of a structure. Even small design features, like ember-resistant vents, can mean the difference between ignition and survival during a wildfire. Property Level Action: Residents play a critical role in making homes more defensible. Programs like FireSmart in Canada provide simple, actionable steps like clearing gutters, removing combustibles within 1.5m of a structure, pruning trees, and creating defensible zones that slow the spread of fire. Community Preparedness: Wildfire resilience grows stronger when neighbours work together. Coordinated fuel reduction projects, community fire breaks, and shared emergency planning all increase collective protection while reducing pressure on frontline responders. The reality is that firefighters will always bring every tool and tactic they can to defend communities but their efforts are most effective when planning, design, and resident action have already reduced the risk. Wildfire urban planning is not an abstract concept, it’s a life-saving strategy. By embedding wildfire risk into how we build, live, and maintain our communities, we give both residents and responders the best chance to protect what matters most.

Why do we move on so quickly, instead of learning lasting lessons to prevent future tragedies? Why Are Fire Accidents Still Increasing? Despite new safety rules and government efforts at both central and state levels, fire accidents continue to rise. Are we missing something? Poor enforcement, outdated infrastructure, and a lack of public awareness may be holding us back. It's time for everyone — from policymakers to citizens — to make fire safety a real priority. Why Do More People Die in Low-Rise Buildings Than High-Rises? It surprises many to learn that deaths from fire accidents are more common in low-rise buildings. High-rises often have stricter safety rules, fire alarms, and trained staff, making escape easier. In contrast, low-rise buildings may lack basic exits, alarms, and awareness, putting many at risk. We need to rethink fire safety for every type of building, not just tall ones. Let’s remember: Every life lost to fire is one too many. Let’s not wait for the next tragedy to take action. What Specific Steps Can Communities Take ? Regular safety audits: Organize building inspections to check for blocked exits, faulty wiring, and missing extinguishers. Fire drills: Hold frequent fire drills so residents know evacuation routes and emergency contacts. Clear escape paths: Ensure stairways, hallways, and exits are always free of clutter. Install alarms and extinguishers: Every home and building should have working smoke alarms and easily accessible fire extinguishers. Community volunteers: Form local teams trained in basic firefighting and first aid. Report hazards: Encourage everyone to promptly report fire risks to authorities or building managers. How Can Awareness Campaigns Help Reduce Fire Accidents? Education: Teach people about using appliances safely, safe cooking practices, and proper disposal of flammables. Demonstrations: Show how to use extinguishers, escape a smoke-filled room, or react to fire alarms. Posters & digital outreach: Share fire safety tips in public spaces, on social media, and community messaging groups. School programs: Educate children early so fire safety becomes lifelong knowledge. Are There New Technologies to Make Buildings Safer? Smart smoke detectors: These connect to phones, sound alarms, and even alert emergency services automatically. Sprinkler systems: Modern sprinklers activate quickly to contain fires before they spread. Flame-retardant materials: Used in furniture, curtains, and building components to slow the spread of fire. IoT devices: Smart plugs and home monitoring can detect electrical hazards before they cause fires. Taking collective action, staying informed, and using the latest technology can make a huge difference in saving lives. Be proactive and not reactive to save your own life.

I've recently been sharing some new work from Zamanialaei, San Martin, Theodori, et al. (2025) which offers insight into how home hardening, defensible space, and neighborhood design interact to shape wildfire outcomes in California’s WUI. A central theme of the paper is that while no single measure is a silver bullet, combined actions matter: “While hardening and defensible space actions may not alter the fundamental risks posed by structure proximity, they can still dramatically improve the survivability of buildings during wildfires.” The study also reveals how wildfire risk factors vary by event. In the Tubbs Fire, for example, flame length played a greater role than structure spacing—underscoring that fuel management can be especially important in sparser neighborhoods, even as dense communities like Coffey Park remain dominated by structure-to-structure spread. Equally important is how clustered construction characteristics can obscure drivers of loss: “Siding materials were not critical to predict outcomes in any one fire, [but] as an overall predictor they were very important, which speaks to the fact that clustered structures on each fire often had similar construction materials, year built, etc.” Perhaps the most forward-looking takeaway comes at the policy level: “Integrating fire risk assessments into land-use planning, including zoning regulations that incorporate risk maps to guide development away from high-exposure areas or require stricter building codes… may help reduce losses. Similarly, policies that provide financial incentives, subsidies, or insurance benefits for retrofitting homes can also contribute to enhancing community resilience.” The message is clear: protecting homes in the WUI requires both individual actions and community-scale solutions, supported by better data, stronger codes, and aligned incentives. Colorado Springs Fire Department is leading by example in community risk reduction (CRR) through partnership with local schools, aimed at preparing the next generation for wildfire prevention. By working with the Manufacturing Industry Learning Lab (MiLL), CSFD is training high school students on ignition-resistant construction techniques, helping future builders understand the "why" and "how" of building codes that protect communities in the wildland-urban interface (Young, 2024). This reporting from The Gazette highlights the importance of such initiatives in enhancing community preparedness. These students are gaining firsthand experience in fire mitigation strategies and learning to build structures with different fire resistance levels—a proactive approach to reducing wildfire risk. This partnership not only provides practical skills but also opens doors for students to explore careers in the fire service, such as fire marshal, building inspector, and fire investigator. It mirrors efforts like the International Code Council's Technical Training Program, which focuses on equipping students with the skills needed for the construction industry. Initiatives like this are prime examples of CRR in action—identifying local risks and investing in solutions that benefit everyone. What makes this approach truly special is its potential to be replicated in other communities. As Kathleen Mena from MiLL said, "Maybe it’s ‘Hey, Colorado Springs did it. What can Fountain do? I’m happy to share a new report conducted for the town of Rancho Mission Viejo by Milliman, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, Colorado State University, XyloPlan and Pyrezo. Together we show a framework for community wildfire mitigation and modeling: assessing current mitigation efforts, recommending optimized mitigation, using new models for fire pathways and structural fire spread, and creating visual and digestible summaries of community risk. We hope this report can inspire continued collaboration, alignment, and analysis on the understanding of wildfire risk.
