    Recently, I visited Dungarpur (Rajasthan) to review HDFC Bank Parivartan ’s CSR interventions focused on delivering hyper-local, sustainable solutions for improving agricultural practices. During this visit, I had the opportunity to engage with the project team from Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) and study the Bio Resource Center (BRC) and Ten Drum Unit model in detail. What stood out was the strong integration of technical rigor, operational clarity, and community ownership within the program design. The Ten Drum Unit is built around 10 structured organic formulations, each serving a specific agronomic function: 1. Soil Health & Nutrient Management Humic Acid, Fulvic Acid, DF-1 (chelated micronutrients), Waste Decomposer, and Jeevamrit are used to improve soil structure, enhance microbial activity, and increase nutrient availability. These inputs strengthen root systems, improve soil porosity, and support long-term soil fertility. 2. Crop Growth & Pest Management EM-based solutions, Dashparni Ark, Amil Ark (ginger–chilli–garlic extract), and Amritpani provide biological pest control, disease resistance, and plant growth stimulation, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides while improving crop resilience. The model follows a crop stage-wise application protocol: 1. Early stage: Root development and microbial activation 2. Vegetative stage: Pest resistance and nutrient uptake 3. Flowering stage: Micronutrient balance 4. Fruit stage: Yield enhancement and disease management This structured, outcome-oriented approach ensures optimized input use, improved productivity, and better risk management at the farm level. From a leadership and governance perspective, this initiative demonstrates how CSR programs can move beyond funding to become capability-building platforms. Farmers are not only receiving inputs, but are also gaining technical knowledge, confidence, and decision-making autonomy. The visible outcomes: reduced chemical dependency, improved soil health, and stronger crop resilience reflect the value of community-led, technically sound, and scalable interventions.     In the conversation about enabling conditions for regenerative agriculture, one piece keeps coming back: non-financial support. Not as an add-on, but as a core part of whether a transition can actually work. In our recent Forum discussion, this was one of the strongest points of agreement - the need for adequate access to knowledge. (Though I am not sure this is the best framing for the below - curious if someone has a better idea) When farmers try to shift how they manage land, they’re not just changing practices. They’re changing how they think, how they plan, and how they relate to their landscape. Doing that alone is nearly impossible. Advisory support is the most obvious piece, but even that is thin on the ground. Many agronomists are still trained to solve isolated problems rather than understand soil, plants and animals as one system. Very few stay fully up to date with the science of soil health or integrated ecological management. And even fewer have the time to walk alongside a farmer long enough to help translate knowledge into decisions that fit the real world. And of course, the obvious problem is that few agronomists are independent - for most, the real income is from a commission of product sales, biasing their advice. But advisory support is only one part of the picture. What tends to be underestimated is the role of peer-to-peer community. When farmers find others who are wrestling with the same questions, the transition becomes doable. Community brings encouragement when things don’t go to plan, examples that make ideas feel real, and a sense of identity that helps counter the loneliness so many farmers face. Mental health is one of the most underdiscussed challenges in farming in general, and it seriously limits the openness to change on the ground. Therefore, a community of peers isn’t a “nice to have”. It’s a protective factor. There’s another piece that gets less attention: coaching. Not agronomy - coaching. Regenerative agriculture is long-term, holistic management. It requires clarity on the direction of the farm: ecological, economic, and social. It touches family decisions, labour, workload, investment, resilience, and purpose. That’s not just technical work. It’s reflective work. Communities like Savory Institute have understood this for a long time. Their approach treats farm management as a human process, not just a technical one. Many farmers say this is the support they didn’t know they needed until they had it. When we talk about “enabling conditions”, we often jump to finance or policy. Both matter. But without the right support around the farmer - high-quality advisory, strong peer communities, and coaching that helps people navigate the human side of change - the transition rests on shaky ground. If we want regenerative farming to spread, we need to take this support ecosystem seriously. Because in the end, it’s people who transition - not practices.

    🌱 Tree species nobody actually wants? Stakeholder consultations full of jargon? Communities treated as beneficiaries rather than co-creators? This should soon be a thing of the past. Fresh from the press: The Agroforestry Co-Design Guide. In my view, the major success factor for any community-based project, and especially carbon projects, are strong social safeguards. This is even more important in the current discussions around permanence in ARR and agroforestry projects. Trees stay when people stay committed. And people stay committed when systems actually make sense for their livelihoods and realities. That’s why co-creation is key. Together with Acorn, at Solidaridad Network we developed a practical Agroforestry Co-Design Guide that provides hands-on guidance for designing agroforestry WITH farmers, not FOR them. The guide walks practitioners through a structured co-design process, from > organizing inclusive stakeholder workshops to > identifying farmer priorities, > analysing trade-offs, > selecting suitable tree species, and > developing planting models that actually work in a given landscape.     Why "One-Size-Fits-All" Development Fails: The AGRA Lesson and the Power of Context-Specific Innovation For years, global development projects have promised transformation in agriculture, health, and infrastructure, especially in developing countries. Yet, time and again, top-down, cookie-cutter solutions fail spectacularly. The recent collapse of the $1 billion Gates-backed AGRA initiative in Africa is just the latest example. What Went Wrong with AGRA? AGRA (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) promised to double yields and halve hunger by promoting industrial agriculture—hybrid seeds, synthetic fertilizers, and monocropping. Instead, after 15 years: ✔Hunger increased by 30% in target countries. ✔Farmer debt soared due to unsustainable input costs. ✔Soil health deteriorated from chemical-intensive farming. ✔Biodiversity collapsed as traditional crops (millet, sorghum) were replaced by maize. AGRA’s fatal flaw? It ignored local context. The Myth of Universal Solutions Too many development projects assume: 🔹 "What worked in Iowa will work in Zambia." (Spoiler: It won’t.) 🔹 "Higher yields = less hunger." (Reality: If farmers can’t afford the inputs, yields don’t matter.) 🔹 "Technology fixes everything." (Truth: Without cultural & ecological fit, tech creates dependency.) The Alternative: Context-Specific Innovation Real impact comes from solutions rooted in local realities. Examples: 🌱 Agroecology in Zimbabwe: Smallholder farmers using drought-resistant native crops outperformed AGRA’s maize monocultures in both yield stability and nutrition. 🌍 Participatory Forest Management in Nepal: Community-led conservation reversed deforestation faster than top-down policies. 💡 Kenya’s "Push-Pull" Farming: A low-tech, chemical-free pest control method developed with farmers, not for them. 3 Keys to Smarter Development Ø Listen First – Farmers, indigenous communities, and local experts already have answers. Are we humble enough to learn from them? Ø Adapt, Don’t Impose – A "proven" model in India may flop in Senegal. Flexibility beats scale. Ø Measure What Matters – Not just yields or GDP, but soil health, food sovereignty, and resilience.     Brazil is taking another important step in recognizing agroecology as a foundation for public policies that support sustainable family farming. The federal government recently announced an investment of R$24 million (around USD 5 million) by 2027 to support Agroecology Study Centers (NEAs) across all regions of the country. This initiative revives and strengthens a successful strategy launched over a decade ago, connecting academic institutions, rural extension services, civil society organizations, and social movements. The reactivation of the NEAs and the expansion of the National Plan for Agroecology and Organic Production (Planapo) show that it is possible to rebuild consistent public policies by listening to local communities, using evidence-based approaches, and ensuring broad social participation. The new FAO report on agroecology and public policies for sustainable family farming confirms that this is the most promising path toward resilient, healthy, and fair food systems. The report highlights key examples such as short food supply chains, the strengthening of public procurement programs from family farmers, the expansion of technical assistance with an agroecological focus, and the integration of policies in health, education, and the environment with sustainable food production in rural territories. These policies not only support the transition toward sustainable agrifood systems, but also directly contribute to ending hunger and poverty, engaging rural youth, valuing traditional knowledge, and protecting natural resources. This is a timely moment to reinforce the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (2019–2028) and to begin preparing for the Second International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD), to be held in 2026 in Colombia. Brazil is once again showing that well-designed public policies, built through participatory processes, are key to transforming realities.     PNG Community Development Best Practices Community development in Papua New Guinea is most successful when communities are not treated as beneficiaries, but as partners in planning, implementation, and decision-making. The following best practices have proven effective across government, church, NGO, and resource-sector programs. 1. Community Ownership and Participation People support what they help create. Involve community members from the beginning. Allow communities to identify their own priorities. Ensure women, youth, elders, and vulnerable groups participate. Use community meetings and participatory planning methods. Best Practice: Communities contribute labour, materials, land, or local knowledge to projects. 2. Respect Local Culture and Leadership PNG is culturally diverse, with over 800 languages and unique customs. Work through traditional leaders and community structures. Respect local customs and decision-making processes. Understand clan relationships and land ownership systems. Best Practice: Combine traditional leadership with modern development approaches. 3. Build Local Capacity Development should leave skills behind, not dependency. Train local people to manage projects. Strengthen community-based organisations (CBOs). Develop leadership, financial management, and governance skills. Best Practice: Every project should include a capacity-building component. 4. Promote Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Development benefits everyone when no one is left behind. Ensure women participate in planning and decision-making. Focus on Sustainability Projects should continue after donor or company support ends. Develop maintenance plans. Train local committees. Establish local funding mechanisms where possible. Best Practice: Ask, "Who will manage this project in five years?" 6. Strengthen Partnerships Development works best when stakeholders collaborate. Engage government agencies. Partner with churches, NGOs, and private sector organisations. Align projects with district and provincial development plans. Best Practice: Avoid duplication by coordinating with existing programs. 7. Environmental Stewardship Communities depend heavily on natural resources. Protect forests, rivers, and biodiversity. Promote sustainable agriculture and fisheries. Include environmental awareness in all projects. Best Practice: Balance economic development with environmental protection. 8. Transparency and Accountability Trust is critical for successful community development. Share project budgets openly. Report progress regularly. Establish grievance and feedback mechanisms.     India’s agricultural extension system is at a crossroads. The conventional model—built largely around “transfer of technology”—is no longer sufficient for today’s realities: climate risk, resource degradation, market volatility, and the growing dominance of small and marginal farmers. What is encouraging is that across India, we already have powerful alternative models of extension—community-led, enterprise-linked, and digital—showing promising pathways for scale, inclusion, and sustainability. In my latest article, I synthesize key lessons from such models (including community cadres, SHG/FPO platforms, farmer service centres, participatory video extension, and agroecological institutions). The evidence points to a clear conclusion: ✅ Extension works best when it becomes a learning and resilience ecosystem, not a one-way advisory pipeline. Key lessons that stand out: Farmers are knowledge creators, not passive adopters—extension must co-produce solutions. Women farmers, smallholders, and socially excluded communities must be the first-mile design focus, not a last-mile afterthought. Digital tools scale only when embedded in trust-based human facilitation. Extension must integrate ecology + livelihoods + markets, not just agronomy. The future is a governed pluralistic ecosystem—public, private, and community actors aligned by quality standards and outcome accountability. Way forward: We need a next-generation extension architecture that blends: community extension cadres (depth + trust) service/enterprise platforms (sustainability + market linkage) digital systems (scale + feedback loops) strong accountability based on outcomes (risk reduction, inclusion, soil–water regeneration, income stability) I would love to hear from practitioners, researchers, and policymakers: Which alternative extension model do you believe has the greatest potential for scale in India—and why?     Over 90 percent of the sorghum seed used by smallholder farmers in northern Ethiopia moves through informal channels. Not because the formal system has failed to reach them. Because the informal system is doing something the formal system cannot replicate. A new paper by Wendmu and colleagues in Ecology and Society maps those networks across 300 households in two ethnolinguistic communities and finds that exchange does not flow randomly. It follows the contours of social life: neighbors, villages, ethnolinguistic communities. Marriage ceremonies, labour exchanges, religious events, these are not just cultural occasions, they are seed transfer events. Running through the whole network is a norm the authors document explicitly: no one should be denied access to seeds. That is not a principle someone wrote into a regulation. It is a moral commitment embedded in community life, and it has been holding the diversity together for generations. Seeds are not the only place where this logic holds. A few years ago, working with colleagues in the same Ethiopian highlands, we showed that soil management ability in smallholder farms was most strongly associated with knowledge accumulated within the household across generations, not with knowledge acquired from outside. Different resource, same lesson: what makes these systems work is not the resource itself, but the social norms and structures that govern how it is managed, shared, and passed on. Strip those away, or simply ignore them, and what looks like an intervention becomes a disruption. I have spent much of my career working on participatory approaches on different aspects of farming, but mainly seeds and agrobiodiversity. The failures I have seen most often were not technical. They were social. Programs that introduced new varieties without understanding existing exchange networks. Seed banks designed around storage logistics rather than the community relationships that give them meaning. The infrastructure that matters most is rarely the physical one. The question for those of us designing these interventions is not just what seeds or knowledge farmers are missing. It is what they already have, and whether we are paying enough attention to protect it.
