Freshwater sustains life on Earth, but it is under growing strain. Although freshwater ecosystems cover less than 1% of the Earth's surface, they: 🐟 Support nearly 10% of all known species 🥤 Provide drinking water 🌽 Sustain food production 💡 Generate energy 🌡️ Help regulate the climate 🤝 Underpin livelihoods Despite how much we depend on freshwater, global action to safeguard it is falling behind. New research on the freshwater system from #SystemsChangeLab finds that efforts are not advancing at the pace and scale necessary to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises while ensuring sustainable development. 📊 Explore the data: https://lnkd.in/gkZKmGHG #Freshwater #WaterSecurity #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #WaterConservation #EcosystemRestoration #SystemsChangeLab

💧 Small hydropower plants are critical to Colombia’s energy security and transition — particularly in remote and rural regions without a connection to the national grid. But growing climate risks, including droughts and irregular rainfall, threaten water availability and the long-term resilience of the sector. WRI Colombia's working paper presents an adaptable and replicable methodology for assessing the climate vulnerability and risk of small hydropower plants across Colombia. The methodology aims to support better informed planning, stronger territorial governance and climate adaptation strategies tailored to local realities. 💡 Want to shift people toward more climate-friendly behaviors? How you do it matters. From incentives and social norms to feedback and choice architecture, there are six key tools that can help turn intention into action. And research shows some approaches can drive significantly more behavior change than others. Explore what works and use WRI’s calculator to estimate the potential emissions impact of different approaches: https://lnkd.in/gjqejNFY #BehaviorChange #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ClimateSolutions

⏳ 5 years ago, countries pledged to cut emissions by 2030. But are the G20 on pace to deliver? Only 5 of 14 economies are trending in the right direction. For the remaining 9, including the US, EU and UK, efforts would need to accelerate significantly, in some cases more than double. 🌊 The ocean is one of the clearest indicators of a changing climate, and the latest trends are alarming. The ocean absorbs about 91% of the excess heat trapped by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. The rate of warming has more than doubled, sea levels are rising faster and ocean chemistry is changing. These shifts have consequences for coastal communities, food security, ecosystems and economies around the world. Here’s what the latest data tells us about our changing ocean and the actions needed to respond: https://bit.ly/4ct6Mcv #Ocean #ClimateChange #ClimateAction

🌎💧Freshwater sustains life on Earth — but growing pressures on the world’s freshwater system are outpacing global action, threatening ecosystems, economies and human well-being. New research launched today from #SystemsChangeLab finds that efforts to safeguard freshwater are not advancing at the pace and scale necessary to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises while ensuring sustainable development. Progress is lagging across nearly every measure. Transforming the freshwater system will require minimizing disruptions to the water cycle — including by protecting and restoring freshwater ecosystems — and tackling primary drivers of biodiversity loss, including pollution, overexploitation, and invasive alien species. It must also include ensuring equitable access to clean water. 📊 Explore the data from World Resources Institute, Bezos Earth Fund, and UNEP-WCMC to see where action is most needed: https://lnkd.in/gkZKmGHG
