On Monday, Aug. 24, Dr. Can Saygin, joined faculty from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's College of Education and P-16 Integration for its CEP General Faculty Meeting. Dr. Saygin, interim provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, senior vice president for Research, and dean of the UTRGV Graduate College, engaged with faculty and discussed priorities related to academic affairs, research and strategic planning. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley welcomed new and returning faculty this week for Faculty Welcome Week 2026, a five-day series marking the start of the 2026-27 academic year. This year, 200 faculty members are joining UTRGV. Welcome Week began Monday in Brownsville with the third annual Summer AI Institute, which brought together nearly 100 faculty participants, followed by the Welcome Back Faculty Luncheon. On Tuesday, UTRGV recognized newly tenured and promoted faculty during a special luncheon. The week continued with Wednesday’s New Faculty Convocation and Thursday’s virtual Faculty Development Day. Faculty Welcome Week concludes Friday, Aug. 21, in Edinburg with the CoP Leadership Meeting and Welcome Back Faculty Luncheon. “Our progress as a university has always been a collective effort,” said Dr. Can Saygin, interim provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, senior vice president for Research, and dean of the Graduate College. “Every student we help succeed, every discovery we make, every program we strengthen, and every partnership we build contributes to something larger: expanding what is possible for UTRGV and for the communities we serve.” The University of Texas System | The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley celebrated its newest doctoral graduates during the Summer 2026 Doctoral Hooding Ceremony. The ceremony recognized 29 graduates who marked the culmination of years of advanced study, research and scholarly achievement in the presence of UTRGV leadership, faculty, advisors, family and friends. The Division of Research Summer Training Week 2026 continued today with sessions designed to strengthen understanding of the research enterprise and the critical roles that support it. Throughout the day, participants explored topics including research compliance, research security, data management, award setup, post-award administration, and research analytics. The sessions encouraged collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a deeper understanding of how our units work together to support research success at UTRGV. We look forward to concluding Training Week tomorrow with additional opportunities for learning, discussion, and cross-functional engagement. Even the complex, ever-changing shapes of river deltas follow a surprisingly simple, predictable pattern—a breakthrough that could transform how we understand and protect these vital ecosystems. 🌎 Why is it important? River deltas support millions of people, sustain wildlife, and face growing threats from sea-level rise. This research offers a new framework to help guide restoration and coastal management worldwide. “This shows that impactful, world-class science can be led right here in South Texas,” Dong said. Today concluded the two-day 2026 AI Days: From Research to Teaching, hosted by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Academic Affairs and the Division of Research. The event brought together faculty and speakers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and Bowen Innovation Group LLC for presentations, demonstrations, and training sessions. Participants explored practical AI tools, shared ideas across disciplines, and discussed ways to apply AI to support research, and improve student learning experiences. Spencer, Senior Associate Vice President for Research Operations at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, has been selected to receive the 2026 NCURA: National Council of University Research Administrators Julia Jacobsen Distinguished Service Award. Presented by the National Council of University Research Administrators, this award recognizes sustained and distinctive contributions that have strengthened the organization and had a measurable impact on the broader research community. Dr. Can Saygin, Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate College, delivered opening remarks at the 2026 STEM Research Conference, where more than 600 participants presented research through nearly 100 oral and over 200 poster presentations across STEM disciplines. Hosted by UTRGV’s College of Sciences and UTRGV College of Engineering & Computer Science on April 24, 2026, the conference brought together students, faculty, and early-career researchers to share work, receive feedback, and engage across fields. In his remarks, Saygin emphasized that UTRGV’s research is grounded in regional impact and highlighted the importance of the conference in connecting that work, creating space for students, faculty, and researchers to share research that serves the Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Can Saygin, Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate College, moderated a conversation with Dr. Bernard Arulanandam, Vice Provost for Research at Tufts University, on how research university classifications are defined and what they signal about institutional priorities, resources, and impact.
