Yesterday was a milestone day for LoRaWAN at AWWA ACE 2026 in Washington, D.C. 💧 LoRa Alliance President Alper YEGIN shared a striking data point: smart metering now makes up one fifth of all LoRaWAN connections, and 90% of those connect smart water meters. ZENNER USA President Rich Sanders revealed a new collaboration between ZENNER USA, Lacuna Space, KYOCERA Global, and Semtech: a Meter Interface Unit launching by year end that connects any water meter through Lacuna's LoRaWAN satellite network, complementing terrestrial coverage. The unit is built on Semtech's latest-generation LoRa Plus and Kyocera's antenna design. Our own Rémi Demerlé moderated a panel with ZENNER USA, TEKTELIC, and Netmore on supporting the Absolute Encoder / UI1203 Sensus protocol over LoRaWAN, a key requirement for water utilities in North America. The ecosystem momentum was everywhere: TEKTELIC shared that it supports over 1 million LoRaWAN smart water meters connected in North America, The Things Industries shared 6 million live connections sending 500 million messages a week, and Netmore highlighted 15 million contracted with 9 million active LoRaWAN connections across 26 countries.
