Today, I am very proud to share Qiskit Fermions, a project that has been my major focus since the beginning of this year. Building this new toolbox has not only pushed me to become a better developer, but has also pushed what is possible to implement on top of the #Qiskit SDK itself. Writing a Rust-based extension linked against Qiskit's new C API and integrating with its new multi-representation compiler framework are just two such highlights. Introducing “Qiskit Fermions,” a new, open-source toolbox from IBM for expressing fermionic operators, constructing fermionic circuits, and defining mappings between fermionic and qubit systems: https://ibm.co/6040ERC20 Computing the properties of molecules and materials requires solving the quantum behavior of interacting 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀, fundamental particles in nature bound by the laws of quantum mechanics. Quantum simulation of these systems is one of the most promising applications of quantum computing, but there is a gap between the fermionic problems researchers want to express and the qubit-based circuits a quantum computer actually runs. #Qiskit Fermions addresses this gap. By preserving fermionic structure through compilation and delaying fermion-to-qubit synthesis until transpilation, researchers can achieve a 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵. This framework also enables advanced simulation workflows, including constant-depth 1D and 2D Fermi-Hubbard time dynamics.
