As industrial systems become more connected, developers face a familiar challenge: integrating data across PLCs, SCADA, cloud platforms, historians, and enterprise applications without creating complex, hard-to-maintain architectures. That's why MQTT and Sparkplug have become key technologies for modern Industrial IoT. MQTT provides a lightweight, publish/subscribe messaging protocol that's ideal for distributed industrial environments.     Unlocking Industrial Data: What Does Sparkplug Actually Do? In the debut episode of the Eclipse Sparkplug / Subscribed podcast, hosts Arlen Nipper (co-inventor of MQTT) and I dive into the core mission of Eclipse Sparkplug and why it has become a cornerstone for modern Industrial IoT (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 architectures. I'm excited to talk about how SparkPlug and OPC UA are complementary technologies.     So it’s been a little over 6 and a half years since I joined Inductive Automation and originally I was brought on to focus on how we can impact and enable the next generation of engineers through our formal launch of Inductive Automation’s Educational Engagement Program. Throughout those 6 and a half years, my role has evolved to focusing on how Ignition can have a larger impact through so many different facets of our community- whether that is the SI community, the Technology Ecosystem, or how we support non-profits- Inductive Automation finds a way. While I still oversee the Educational Engagment program, Annabelle Haley has really taken the program’s foundation to a whole new level.     🇫🇷 What an unforgettable week in Paris. And no, it wasn't because of the intense heatwave! ☀️ I just wrapped up my first in-person participation at the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 Plenary, where I gained deep insights into the international standards shaping the future of the IoT and Digital Twins, particularly around the work in WG3. Here is a summary of the key updates, events, and networking from the week: 📋 𝗘𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 During the plenary, I presented our official Liaison Report, which highlights the Eclipse Foundation’s role as a vendor-neutral steward bridging open specifications into formal international standards frameworks. Our primary focus remained on the upcoming Eclipse Sparkplug v4 release, which is on track for Q4 2026. With the TCK and the new version of our open source implementation Eclipse Tahu expected by mid-2027, our goal is to transpose this into an international standard. Leveraging our status as an approved PAS Submitter, we will be discussing this directly with JTC 1 national bodies to secure a positive vote. With the expert guidance of our PAS mentor, David Filip, I am confident we can successfully navigate this process. I also highlighted our active collaboration with SC 38 on Dataspaces, which provide the technical infrastructure for secure, distributed data sharing. We anticipate #DSP and #DCP full publication within the next 2 to 3 months. 🎤 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 & 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 On Tuesday afternoon, I spoke at the co-located EU Networking Event focused on standards for Cloud-Edge-IoT ecosystems, presenting the Eclipse Dataspaces framework on behalf of my colleague, Javier Valiño. The official social program that evening was an outstanding way to gather together. Sponsored by various EU research projects (INSTAR Standards, #CEISphere, O-CEI Horizon, COP-PILOT Horizon, and LICORICE Project), it was a perfect mix of culture and community: Besides the informative workshop at the AFNOR premises, we enjoyed a guided walking tour around the exterior of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, shared a networking dinner at Café du Pont Neuf and jumped into an electric vessel for a fantastic night cruise on the River Seine. Paris brought an intense heatwave with extreme temperatures all week long. To escape the terrible heat, some of us in WG3 gathered on Thursday for an informal, out-of-program meeting over cold beers, a great way to unwind together after a busy week 🍻 A very special thanks goes to Antonio Kung for his excellent work organising the regional workshop, and for his kindness in providing tickets so my family could join us on the river cruise. I am also grateful to the many colleagues I met throughout the week for the meaningful conversations and the time we shared. Your insights helped me better understand your goals within the committee and national bodies. Thanks a lot!
