Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat, and our response must be equally global. Advancing the next generation of life-saving antibacterial products requires sustained investment and collaboration across borders. CARB-X creates opportunities for those partnerships and investments to take shape, which is a critical part of accelerating innovation. We convened product developers, funders, and industry leaders in Munich for CARB-X's fourth annual Investor Day to showcase innovative antibacterial programs, discuss opportunities for partnership, and foster global connections among the people working to develop AMR solutions. The summer is here, and that means our #Research #Experience for #Undergraduates (#REU) program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has begun! With 21 REUs in #Integrated #Nanomanufacturing (#INM) and #Translational #Biophotonics (#TBP) programs, this year's cohort has already begun tackling new and exciting research projects with Boston University faculty and grad students. In addition to our annual campus tour, the REUs have already taken duck boat tour of Boston, and engaged in seminars with Translational Biophotonics program head Darren Roblyer and Melinda Shockley, Executive Director of Faculty Entrepreneurship. There, they learned how their research may transition from the laboratory to industry and clinician's hands. There's so much more to come, and we're so excited to see the stellar research our students produce while they make lifelong memories in Boston this summer. The future of health research depends on more than data—it depends on our ability to connect data, disciplines, and people. That's why the launch of DataHub by the Center for Health Data Science at Boston University School of Public Health is such an important milestone. The platform helps researchers discover, access, and leverage health data more efficiently while fostering the cross-disciplinary collaboration that drives AI-enabled and convergent research. As CHDS Executive Director Debbie Cheng notes, “Ultimately, our goal is to help researchers use complex data to answer important questions and generate insights that can improve health.” By bringing data resources, expertise, and researchers together in one place, DataHub will help unlock new opportunities for discovery and accelerate the translation of data into better health. We're delighted to share that IOC Director Loretta Lees and Boston University Professor of Sociology has been awarded the 2026 Patron's Gold Medal, one of two highest honors awarded by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) for her contributions to the field of geography and leadership in gentrification, housing, urban geography, and displacement research. Reflecting on this honor, Professor Lees noted: “Geography is the discipline of the 21st century. It taught me critical thinking and how to address social justice challenges in cities. I am deeply honored to receive this medal. Join CARB-X Executive Director Kevin Outterson for his Fleming Initiative guest lecture at Imperial College London, where he will discuss antibiotics as infrastructure, like clean water systems and power grids, to contextualize their importance in society. Antibiotics are the backbone of modern medicine – without them, common infections and routine surgeries become far more dangerous. But unlike other drug classes, antibiotics lose effectiveness over time as bacteria evolve and develop resistance. 🏆 Wilson Wong of Boston University has been named Innovator of the Year for pioneering engineered cell therapies that could transform treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). At the Boston University College of Engineering, Wong’s lab is developing precision therapies that train immune cells to target cancer while sparing healthy tissue. In collaboration with Senti Biosciences, early clinical trials have already shown promising results, with over one-third of patients achieving full remission. Beyond AML, Wong’s work in synthetic biology is advancing safer CAR T-cell therapies and next-generation RNA-based treatments through ventures like Keylicon Biosciences.
