Boston researchers, #DALISPIM light sheet imaging is coming soon to a core near you… Thanks to the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s Research Infrastructure program, we’re partnering with the Boston University Photonics Center to advance spatial and molecular imaging in Massachusetts! This project, led by Photonics Center Director Thomas Bifano in collaboration with Drs. Hossein Alizadeh and Zahid Yaqoob, will establish the new PRISM shared lab at BU and enable a new generation of researchers to make breakthrough discoveries and shorten the timeline from bench to bedside. The lab will include a full LifeCanvas tissue processing and imaging pipeline with a SmartBatch+ tissue clearing & labeling device and a DALISPIM microscope. 🧠 What if researchers could study brain activity without keeping participants inside a laboratory? That’s the idea behind NinjaNIRS (NINJA), a wearable fNIRS helmet developed at Boston University that allows researchers to image the whole cortex while participants remain mobile, opening new possibilities for studying brain function in more real-world settings. The technology was pioneered by Bernhard Zimmermann, senior research scientist and electrical engineer in BU’s Boston University Neurophotonics Center and Bio Optical and Acoustic Spectroscopy (BOAS) Lab, where he continues to lead work in fNIRS instrumentation and systems engineering. Unlike many commercial systems, NINJA is open and modular, allowing Zimmermann and his colleagues to continually upgrade its hardware and adapt it to researchers’ needs. The system is already being used at BU and collaborating institutions, including Technische Universität Berlin and Northeastern University. Zimmermann’s goal is ultimately to make advanced brain-imaging technology more accessible, and to see it make an impact through the researchers who use it. Based on studies visualizing aerosol deposition in functioning lungs with the crystal ribcage, Drs. Hadi T. Nia and Joseph P. Mizgerd hypothesize that lungs contain two functionally distinct types of alveoli, organized into a mosaic architecture, which differentially mediate early responses to inhaled particles. They plan to define the anatomy and physiology of alveolar mosaicism by mapping the spatial relationship between tile alveoli and band alveoli with terminal airways, determining whether alveolar mosaicism drives transcriptional and developmental differences, and evaluating whether injurious aerosols elicit distinct cellular responses in tiles versus bands. These studies, anticipated to establish new concepts of alveolar organization in the functioning lungs, have been funded by the NHLBI (R01 HL185414: Functional Heterogeneity of Alveoli and the Early Response to Airborne Agents, August 2026 through April 2030).

And so another year of summer programming comes to a successful close! With 21 #Research Experiences for #Undergraduates (#REU), 11 Research Experiences for #Teachers (#RET), and 6 #NTU Singapore Research Exchange students, we had one of our most packed summers yet, culminating in our annual poster session in which the BU community comes to admire our participants' hard work and results. A massive thank you to professors Xin Zhang (#Integrated #Nanomanufacturing) and Darren Roblyer (#Translational #Biophotonics) for leading our summer programming, and to Dean Elise Morgan and the Boston University College of Engineering for their assistance with this year's inaugural NTU research exchange program. Lastly, we want to thank our program participants! Our summers wouldn't be the same without your passion for learning and advancing the fields of #engineering and #photonics and #optics research. Best of luck to all as you prepare for your next semesters!

A sound-shield technology developed by BU engineers has been named a 2026 "World Changing Idea" by Fast Company. 💨 Designed to reduce noise while allowing air to flow freely, the innovation has the potential to make technologies like air conditioners, airplanes, and data centers significantly quieter. Created in the lab of College of Engineering professor Xin Zhang, the technology could help build healthier, more sustainable environments without sacrificing energy efficiency or performance. The #NinjaNIRS, or #NINJA, is a wearable #fNIRS helmet that has thrust the field of #neuroscience into new heights, and which almost all Boston University #graduate #students affiliated with neuroscience subjects have come across in their #research. In essence, this fNIRS #innovation has allowed subjects’ whole heads to be tested while retaining #mobility, allowing for “real world” #brain #function #scans outside of a #laboratory. The #technology is well known within the Boston University community. What not everyone knows, however, is who pioneered this instrument, and the continued fNIRS work he leads in the #Neurophotonics Center and #Bio #Optical and #Acoustic #Spectroscopy (BOAS) lab: Bernhard Zimmermann, senior research scientist and electrical engineer. Big news! ‼️The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Boston University $20 million to help create a national network of cloud labs, artificial intelligence-infused research facilities that can remotely run science and engineering studies. The network will allow researchers from anywhere in the country to request complex experiments and tests that they don’t have the equipment or expertise to do themselves. The network will be made up of 20 individual labs, or nodes, around the United States, each specializing in different areas of research, from materials science to chemistry. The BU-based lab will focus on biotechnology and engineering biological systems and will have the capacity to host studies exploring topics such as new vaccines, DNA sequencing, and genetic engineering. A new study from Boston University is transforming how researchers understand the lungs. Published in Nature Biomedical Engineering, the research from Hadi T. Nia, doctoral student Gabrielle Grifno, and collaborators used the Crystal Ribcage technology to observe inhaled particles in real time, revealing a previously unknown pattern of aerosol deposition in the alveoli. The findings could improve targeted drug delivery and provide new insights into how pollutants, pathogens, and lung diseases develop. The study was conducted by researchers from Boston University College of Engineering and the Boston University School of Medicine, highlighting the power of interdisciplinary collaboration.
