IoT vs IoE
The Internet of Everything was listed as one of the top trends of 2015 by Gartner. Originally Cisco defined the Internet of Everything as the intelligent connection of people, process, data and things. “The Internet of Everything (IoE) brings together people, process, data, and things to make networked connections more relevant and valuable than ever before-turning information into actions that create new capabilities, richer experiences, and unprecedented economic opportunity for businesses, individuals, and countries”.
The terms Internet of Things and Internet of Everything are often used interchangeably, and while both have revolutionized the tech industry, there are important differences between the two concepts.
Internet of Things (IoT)
The term “Internet of Things” was introduced or coined by British entrepreneur Kevin Ashton in 1999. It primarily aimed at describing connectivity among physical objects. The concept gained steam for its ability to connect the unconnected – physical-first objects previously incapable of generating, transmitting and receiving data unless augmented or manipulated. Embedding sensors, control systems, and processors into these objects enables horizontal communication across a multi-node, open network of physical-first objects. Examples of IoT include connected cars, smart meters, and smart cities, among others.
Internet of Everything (IoE)
The concept of Internet of Everything developed as a natural improvement of the IoT movement and is primarily associated with Cisco’s tactics to start a new marketing domain. The main difference between internet of everything (IoE) and internet of things (IoT) is in the intelligent connection.
“THE INTERNET OF THINGS AS THE EQUIVALENT OF A RAILROAD LINE, INCLUDING THE TRACKS AND THE CONNECTIONS, WHEREAS THE INTERNET OF EVERYTHING IS ALL OF THAT, AND THE TRAINS, TICKET MACHINES, STAFF, CUSTOMERS, WEATHER CONDITIONS, ETC.”
IoE is a concept that extends the Internet of Things (IoT) emphasis on machine-to-machine (M2M) communications to describe a more complex system that also encompasses people and processes and data, which make the 4 “pillars” as defined by Cisco: People, Things, Data, and Processes.
So generally speaking, the IoE is considered a superset of IoT and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication considered a subset of IoT. IoE covers the wider concept of connectivity from a viewpoint of current connectivity technology use-cases. IoT, in its broadest conceptualization, includes any type of physical or virtual object or entity that can be made addressable and given the ability to transmit data without human-to-machine input – those are the things in the IoT. Things are often items that would not have been networked in the past; automation of thing communications is also central to the IoT concept. The IoE, on the other hand, also includes user-generated communications and interactions associated with the global entirety of networked devices.
