Maternal deserts are a real thing and are growing as hospitals are closing their OB units. Pregnant women experiencing an emergency will still go to the closest ED. It is pertinent that they are educated and the hospitals that deliver babies need to be educated to manage pregnant patients and treat emergencies effectively. Maternal mortality in the U.S. remains at unacceptable levels and HealthStream can help provide education to help reduce the numbers

One of the biggest challenges in neonatal care is that premature newborns don't always tell us how sick they are, at least not immediately. A recent study has highlighted the value of CRIB-II (Clinical Risk Index for Babies II), a scoring system that helps doctors identify which premature babies are at the highest risk of serious complications or death within the first few hours after birth. It uses five simple clinical parameters: birth weight, gestational age, body temperature, blood acid levels, and the baby's sex. This matter because in neonatal care, timing is everything. The earlier we recognise that a baby is high-risk, the faster we can: ✅Intensify monitoring. ✅Prioritise NICU resources. ✅Decide whether the baby needs referral to a higher centre. ✅Have more informed conversations with families about what lies ahead. As doctors, we often rely on years of training and clinical judgment but tools like CRIB-II don't replace experience, they strengthen it. They help us make faster, more objective decisions during the most critical hours of a newborn's life. Sometimes, the difference between a good outcome and a poor one isn't just the treatment. 8/13/26 Henderson Hospital says it needs more adult inpatient capacity. Its solution: end maternity and NICU services and convert that space into medical-surgical beds. The capacity problem may be real. But so is the care being lost.
