Gold mining meets solar power in northern Nevada! Nevada Gold Mines — the Barrick/Newmont joint venture and the largest gold-producing complex in the world — is putting serious money into decarbonizing its operations, and it's a great example of heavy industry going solar at scale. The headline numbers: 💰 Up to $95M awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (part of a $475M national clean-energy demonstration package) ☀️ 40 MW solar + 100 MWh battery storage → Turquoise Ridge Mine, Humboldt County ☀️ 60 MW solar + 148 MWh battery storage → Cortez Mine, Lander County 🏗️ ~300 construction jobs expected 🌍 ~2 million tons of CO2 avoided over the project's lifetime This isn't NGM's first move either. They already built the TS Solar Power Plant near Battle Mountain — 200 MW across two phases — which alone supplies about 17% of the company's annual power needs. Add in EV fleet charging infrastructure, a shift to cleaner-burning natural gas at their TS Power Plant, and even exploratory work on deep-drilling geothermal, and you've got a mining company treating decarbonization as core strategy, not a side project — with a stated goal of net-zero operations by 2050. DOE designed this specifically as a "Clean Energy Demonstration Program on Current and Former Mine Land" — the goal is a replicable model other mining operators can copy. Financial Modeling for Mining BESS & Optimisation Beyond Peak Shaving For mining operations in South Africa, sizing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) involves balancing extreme load profiles. Deep-level winders, massive crushing mills, and continuous ventilation systems create highly variable step-loads that can strain both localised infrastructure and the national grid. Traditionally, financial models justify a BESS purely on two vectors: mitigating production downtime during power anomalies and avoiding peak-period tariff penalties. However, calculating the Net Present Value (NPV) of a multi-megawatt battery asset based solely on these use cases often reveals a long payback period. During off-peak hours or between major production shifts, large blocks of battery capacity sit unutilised. By introducing intelligent software coordination, mining operations can execute revenue stacking. This approach allows the operation to monetise that latent capacity by providing high-speed frequency stabilisation to the grid network without compromising the essential energy reserves required for life-safety systems and underground ventilation backup. Fortescue just posted a record 201 million tonnes shipped in FY26, with C1 costs sitting at $18.74 per tonne. Solid numbers by any measure. But the more interesting story is what comes next. For FY27, cost guidance jumps to somewhere between $20.50 and $21.75 per tonne. That's a 9 to 16% increase, and it's largely tied to a 690 MW solar plant build and the shift toward electrified, concentrate-based production. This is what the early stages of decarbonizing a large mining operation actually look like on a balance sheet. The efficiency gains come later. The capital pressure comes first. It's a dynamic worth paying attention to for anyone working with large industrial operators navigating the same transition, where the investment cycle and the cost curve don't always move in the same direction at the same time. #mining #energytransition
