But a closer look revealed multiple red flags. A quick Google search confirmed it: 100% scam. Here are the signs to watch for: ❌ Major Red Flags 𝗡𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲: The sender used a vague format like “John D.” — not how legitimate executive recruiters identify themselves. 𝗚𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: Authentic recruiters use corporate domains that are verifiable and traceable. 𝗡𝗼 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Missing phone number, company details, LinkedIn profile, or physical address. 𝗧𝗼𝗼-𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱-𝘁𝗼-𝗯𝗲-𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆: Inflated compensation is a classic lure to get you to respond quickly. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Missing location, responsibilities, reporting structure, and required experience. 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: Real recruiters rarely do this — it’s a tactic to grab attention. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Multiple emails within hours, pushing you to “secure your spot.” Pressure + flattery = scam pattern. 𝗡𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂: Legit recruiters always reference LinkedIn, referrals, or your portfolio. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱, 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Reads like an AI-generated template rather than a real recruiter’s outreach. 𝗙𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: The “previous email” looked pasted in, not part of a real conversation. ⚠️ What these scams often lead to: Requests for personal information “Background check” or “processing” fees Phishing links Attempts to harvest your resume and identity 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 — especially those actively exploring new opportunities — are prime targets. Unfortunately, these scams are becoming common, and I wanted to share a few reminders to help protect job seekers. If something feels off, trust your instincts and verify BEFORE responding. ✅ Legitimate recruiters communicate using their company's email domain (for example, name at company dot net/org/com). ✅ Be cautious if someone claiming to be a recruiter representing a company contacts you from a free email service such as Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or similar accounts. Before engaging: • Cross-check information on the company's official careers website • Verify the recruiter's LinkedIn profile and company affiliation • Review LinkedIn profile's established work history, connections, and activity • Be cautious about sharing personal or sensitive information Stay safe, stay informed, and let's look out for one another!!

I recently ran into a scam playbook on LinkedIn and want to share it so others can protect themselves. ♦️ How the Scam Works: 1️⃣ Unsolicited Outreach: A high-level title (e.g., "Executive Director of Recruiting") messages you about broad mid/senior roles. 2️⃣ Off-Platform Pivot: They immediately push to switch the conversation off LinkedIn to Teams or third-party chat. 3️⃣ Upfront Paywall: They send a rate card demanding upfront payment for "resume optimization" before moving forward with any hiring process. 4️⃣ AI-Generated Scripts: Any skepticism is met with canned, ChatGPT-style responses reassuring you of their "transparency." 5️⃣ Refusal of Calls or Official Email: They refuse video calls or official corporate emails, hiding behind vague "confidentiality" claims. 6️⃣ Identity Mismatches: External chat profiles, emails, and phone voices completely contradict the LinkedIn persona. 7️⃣ Account Recycling: Once reported or deleted, an identical fake profile pops up the next day with 1 connection and zero verifications. 🚩 Key Red Flags: ⁉️ Recruiters NEVER charge candidates: Real recruiters are paid by employers, never job seekers. Pay-to-play recruitment is always a scam. ⁉️ Check "About this member": Profiles created days ago with 1 connection and no verifications are major red flags. ⁉️ No Corporate Email: If they can't message from an official @company.com domain, walk away. ⁉️ Video/Phone Refusal: Legitimate recruiters willingly jump on a quick video or phone call. 💢 Stay vigilant and trust your instincts. Many of you have reached out to me and asked if I reached out to you about a job from an email that looks professional, but it's ultimately from a Gmail or Hotmail account. NO, that absolutely was not me, and if you receive something similar from what you feel is a recruiter from another seemingly legitimate recruiting firm, it is a scam! I was recently targeted by a very convincing recruiting scam, and I want to share it to protect my network and raise awareness. I was approached on LinkedIn by someone claiming to be head of HR/Compliance for a large corporation about a senior position. The initial reach-out seemed incredibly legitimate, and once passed to the "recruiter" they even used the exact name, title, and email signature of a real talent acquisition leader at that organization. I confirmed via inmail with the real person that the correspondence was in fact fake. The red flags appeared when the email came from a free @outlook.com address rather than a corporate domain. I was told that although I had great experience as a senior leader, my resume needed an immediate, rewrite within 6–12 hours to pass a proprietary screening framework to be considered by management for the role. Hmmm... I need what?? This is a classic bait-and-switch scam designed to exploit job seekers by using urgency and stolen professional identities. A quick reminder for fellow professionals: 1. Always check the exact email domain. Global enterprises do not hire out of free Outlook, Hotmail, or Gmail accounts. 2. If a recruiter pushes you toward a specific paid resume writer or service to "pass a screen," stop immediately. 3. Verify by reaching out to the professional directly on LinkedIn via DM before handing over data or money. Job hunting takes enough focus without having to navigate bad actors. Something I’ve been noticing more lately, and hearing about from clients too: fake recruiters are becoming much more common. And they’re getting harder to spot. The message may look professional, mention a real company, include a convincing job description, and come from someone who appears to have a legitimate LinkedIn profile. So when a recruiter reaches out, don’t just ask, “Does this look real?” Ask, “Can I verify this independently?” A few red flags to watch for: ▪️ The email uses a personal or non-company domain. ▪️They ask you to pay for a background check or resume optimization services before moving forward. ▪️They pressure you to act quickly or move the conversation to WhatsApp, Telegram, or another messaging app. ▪️They ask for sensitive personal or banking information early in the process. And one simple habit can protect you: don’t verify a recruiter using the links or contact information they sent you. Open LinkedIn separately. Go directly to the company website. Search for the person and the role yourself. If possible, talk to someone you know inside the company. A legitimate opportunity should survive independent verification.
