Day Zero doesn’t launch until October. But we’re not waiting until October to start building it. We’re promoting it now. We’re building the community now. We’re talking to founders now. And most importantly, we’re learning what people actually need before we launch. Day Zero is being built for people at the earliest stage of entrepreneurship. Before the accelerator. Before the funding round. Before product-market fit. Sometimes before there’s even a product. Just an idea, a problem worth solving, and someone willing to take the first step. October is the official launch. August and September are about building in public, growing the founding community, testing the concept, and bringing the right people into the room. I don’t want Day Zero to suddenly appear one morning with a polished launch announcement. I want people to watch it being built. And maybe even help shape what it becomes. We launch in October. But Day Zero starts now. If you’re building something from 0 → 1, I want to hear what you’re working on.

UC Berkeley’s Global Studies Program launched a new summer camp to teach high school students how to build social impact startups. The program covers venture creation, financing, and scaling, culminating in student pitches for innovative solutions around the world. Economic development works best when we invest from both the top down AND the bottom up. I love seeing economic development organizations create opportunities to invest directly in the people who already live in our cities and regions—while also recruiting companies from outside the region to expand and invest. Both are essential. Top-down economic development brings new companies, capital, infrastructure, and workforce development. Bottom-up economic development discovers the entrepreneurs, innovators, and small businesses already embedded in our communities—and gives them the listening, relationships, resources, and support they need to grow. Why does this matter? Because small and medium-sized enterprises create a tremendous amount of America’s jobs and economic activity. When we help local entrepreneurs succeed, we aren’t simply creating businesses—we’re creating jobs, building wealth, strengthening families, and developing leaders who have a vested interest in the communities where they live. This is the power of Enterprise Facilitation: start by listening to the people in the community, understand their dreams and challenges, and then help connect them to the resources necessary to turn ideas into sustainable enterprises. The future of economic development isn’t recruitment OR entrepreneurship. It’s recruitment AND entrepreneurship. It’s investing in the companies we want to attract while investing in the people who are already here. New survey insight: 58% of young people we surveyed are already building or planning a business — but 2 in 3 say funding access is their biggest barrier. Entrepreneurial ambition among Gen Z isn't the problem. Access to capital, mentorship, and practical skills training is.
