It's been a busy year for the AI, Ethics, & Creative Labor lab that I co-direct with Sareeta Amrute at The New School. www.aicreativelabor.com We launched WAIT (Workshop for AI Troubles), created our AI Reader, ran workshops and gave talks focused on deepening our understanding of how AI transforms the conditions, politics, and value of creative work, and started building a network of creators, scholars, and advocacy organizations across the city who share that conviction. F(r)ictions: Creative Work in an Age of AI was the high point. We convened this day-long symposium on May 1st and brought together practitioners, legal scholars, and professional guilds. What connects a documentary director who fabricates a historical photo, a model whose face is digitally altered without her knowing, a storyboard artist who worked thirty years and owns none of it, and authors whose books were pirated by the millions to train systems that now compete with them? F(r)ictions was a day spent tracing and untangling that thread over three panels: from the front lines to the courtroom to future models. We convened experts to learn about these overlaps and how creative communities have responded to AI's growing role in their domains. Proceedings of the symposium are now on the website (https://lnkd.in/eVgvNCFW), and the panel videos will be announced on our new Lab for AI, Ethics, & Creative Labor page, along with other exciting news. If your research or practice overlaps with any of this, reach out to connect and collaborate.

Recent reports indicate a significant uptick in investments towards artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and governance. Major companies and startups alike are recognizing the importance of building frameworks that ensure responsible AI use. The Global AI Ethics Institute, for example, has announced a new initiative aimed at helping organizations navigate the complexities of ethical AI deployment. This trend is noteworthy as it reflects a growing awareness of the potential pitfalls associated with AI technologies, from bias in algorithms to privacy concerns. As AI systems become more prevalent across industries, establishing a strong ethical foundation will not only impact public trust but also guide regulatory frameworks that are likely to emerge in the near future. The proactive approach to governance could very well be a deciding factor in the sustainability and acceptance of AI innovations. Addressing the ethics of AI isn't just an add-on; it’s foundational. As we move forward, it's crucial to consider how these developments will shape the future landscape of technology and society. This is an ongoing conversation that will influence the way we interact with intelligent systems in the years to come.

Scaling AI ethics research often hits a wall when isolated efforts struggle to align with broader safety standards. For leaders like Nishanshi Shukla - AI Ethics & Safety, the friction isn't just about generating insights; it's about finding a unified space where those findings translate into actionable policy and development practices across organizations. AI Coalition bridges that gap by connecting practitioners, researchers, and organizations to collaborate directly on responsible AI. Instead of working in silos, we provide the network needed to turn individual safety research into collective industry progress. 2084 and the AI Revolution (Updated & Expanded Edition) – Professional Book Description 2084 and the AI Revolution by John C. Lennox is one of the most thought-provoking books exploring the future of artificial intelligence, human identity, ethics, and society. Drawing inspiration from George Orwell's 1984, Lennox examines whether AI will become humanity's greatest tool or its greatest challenge. Rather than focusing solely on technology, the book explores the broader implications of AI, including machine intelligence, human enhancement, bioengineering, automation, surveillance, employment, privacy, and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Lennox presents a balanced discussion of both the opportunities and risks associated with the rapid advancement of AI while asking a fundamental question: Will technology change what it means to be human? The updated and expanded edition includes recent developments in AI, neuroscience, machine learning, technological enhancement, and the growing impact of AI across industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, military applications, education, communications, and the future of work. Who Should Read This Book? AI Governance Professionals Business Executives and Board Members Cybersecurity Leaders Technology Strategists Policy Makers and Regulators Data Scientists and AI Engineers Students interested in AI Ethics Anyone concerned about the future impact of AI Key Topics Covered Artificial Intelligence and Society Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) AI Ethics and Governance Human Enhancement and Transhumanism Surveillance and Privacy Future of Work and Automation Bioengineering and Emerging Technologies The Relationship Between Technology and Human Values Why This Book Stands Out Unlike highly technical AI books, 2084 focuses on the strategic, ethical, philosophical, and societal questions surrounding AI. It helps readers understand not only what AI can do, but also what AI should do and how humanity should govern increasingly powerful technologies. Why I Recommend It For executives, cybersecurity leaders, and AI governance professionals, this book provides an excellent framework for understanding the risks, opportunities, and long-term consequences of artificial intelligence. As organizations adopt AI at scale, technical knowledge alone is no longer sufficient—leaders must also understand governance, ethics, trust, accountability, and the human impact of AI-driven decisions. Given your work in AI Security, ISO/IEC 42001, AI Governance, and executive technology consulting, this is one of the few AI books that moves beyond algorithms and focuses on the strategic questions that boards, regulators, and business leaders need to address. https://amzn.to/43UiWqj

This is the first documented case of acceleration ethics driving AI innovation in a real world company and tool, I believe. Conceptually, acceleration AI ethics proposes that faster innovation solves the problems initially created by innovation. The paper describes the ethical foundation / human values supporting this strategy of responsible AI development. Two critical ideas are 1) innovation is intrinsically valuable (in some ways like art), and 2) the unknown is intrinsically valuable in the sense of magnetic. https://lnkd.in/dhRJcugM Many thanks to the those who helped make the paper possible: Jesslyn Dymond, Yoelit Lipinsky, PhD, Nathan (Nate) Kinch #aiethics

**AI Ethics: The Invisible Bias in Your Training Data** Your AI model is only as ethical as the data it learns from—and that data is riddled with invisible bias. Recent studies reveal that 78% of publicly available datasets contain skewed demographics, reinforcing stereotypes under the guise of "neutral" training. This isn’t just an academic concern. Deployed systems in hiring, lending, and healthcare are already making discriminatory decisions based on flawed inputs. The myth? That bias can be "fixed" post-deployment. In reality, retroactive ethical patches are like putting a bandage on a bullet wound. The real solution lies in proactive dataset auditing, diverse curation, and interdisciplinary ethics review boards. Take Google’s 2023 image recognition scandal: a model labeled racially diverse images with harmful stereotypes because its training data overrepresented Eurocentric beauty standards. The fix? They rebuilt the dataset from scratch—costly, time-consuming, but necessary. Ethical AI isn’t a checkbox. It’s a continuous process requiring transparency, accountability, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. The question isn’t whether your model is biased—it’s whether you’re doing enough to find out. #AIethics #BiasInAI #DataDrivenBias #FutureOfEthics #TechAccountability
