⚡Texas just hit pause on new data center hookups. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱. Governor Abbott ordered a full audit of all pending data center interconnections—no project moves forward until it passes a new, stricter review. 🛑 Right now, 474 gigawatts of requests are waiting. That’s five times the state’s peak electricity demand. Around 90% of these requests come from data centers, spread across about 1,800 projects. The grid can’t keep up.🔌 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. New York, Maine, and others are also pausing approvals amid rising electricity costs and community pushback. 🔋AI infrastructure isn’t just about chips or capital anymore—𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝘂𝗴 𝗶𝗻. The main issue is affordability, not politics. According to Brookings, US electricity costs have gone up about 42% since 2019, compared with a 29% rise in the Consumer Price Index. 📉 ⚠️ PJM, the largest US grid operator, said that a projected $6.3 billion increase in consumer electricity costs over three years is mostly due to data centers. When a voter's bill climbs, and a billion-dollar facility opens down the road, the causal story writes itself — whether or not the economics are that simple. They rarely are. 🏙️Interconnection queues have always been the slowest and least visible bottleneck in the system, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲. The capital spending numbers we discussed this earnings season, about $724 billion across the four largest cloud companies in 2026, assume that both electricity and approvals will be ready on time. Texas just challenged that idea. Here’s the new reality for anyone building AI capacity: → Power grid interconnection is the real bottleneck. ⛔ → Public approval is no longer a rubber stamp—it’s a gatekeeper. 🏛️ → Every capacity plan must answer: Where does your electricity come from? 🤔 Who approves it? Everyone is racing to build more data center capacity. The harder conversation is where. The U.S. power grid is already under serious strain. Data centers are on track to consume one-fifth of all electricity generated in the country by 2035. The PJM Interconnection, which runs from Virginia to Illinois and hosts a significant chunk of the country's data centers, paused new connection requests for four years. Electricity prices on that grid are up 76% in the past year. You can have the land, the financing, the permits, and the plans all lined up. If the grid can't support you, none of it matters. Site selection has to account for more than connectivity and power costs. The infrastructure underneath AI is physical. It sits somewhere. It draws from somewhere. Reuters reported in January that filings now point to more than 150 GW of planned new U.S. data center power capacity, compared with current U.S. data center capacity of just under 15 GW. #Virginia remains the center of gravity, but #Texas, #Pennsylvania, #Arizona, #Indiana, and #NewMexico are all part of the next approaching wave. That kind of growth has a certain gravity to it. It pulls on everything around it: utilities, equipment supply chains, commissioning schedules, and above all, experienced people. It also explains why so many projects feel like a race against time. Demand is arriving faster than the surrounding infrastructure can comfortably absorb it. Google said earlier this year that hooking up data centers to the U.S. power grid is now their biggest problem. Wait times in some spots are over 10 years. Crazy. That's the real issue. Recently, I posted about how AI and data centers are driving electricity demand higher and putting upward pressure on energy prices. Now we're starting to see the impact. Texas has paused new data center interconnections while ERCOT and state regulators review the unprecedented number of large load requests. The queue has grown to roughly 474 GW, with about 90% tied to data centers. This is more than five times ERCOT's record peak demand! In a statement on July 3, Abbott said that data centers, which are physical facilities used to store large amounts of information and are heavily used in AI models, must comply with Public Utility Commission (PUCT) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) mandates. “Our top priority is to protect Texans’ safety and quality of life,” Abbott said. ..... ERCOT is currently reviewing roughly 474 gigawatts of proposed new electricity demand, representing more than five times the state’s record peak load, the governor said. He said that about 90 percent of the power requests are from data centers. Under Abbott’s directive, developers will be required to provide more information on power demand, water use, tax incentives, ownership structures, and efforts to mitigate local impacts. The audit encompasses several points, including whether the data centers are bringing in their own water or reusing water for cooling, rather than using water used by municipalities .... ..... “Details should include projected annual and peak electricity consumption; and any effort and progress to construct or procure on-site electric generation including generation type, or other measures to reduce demand on the ERCOT grid,” it states. ..... “Everyone agrees Texas needs the transmission necessary to meet the growing needs of the state. However, support for ERCOT’s 765-kV transmission plan should not come at the expense of private property rights,” he wrote, referring to a type of extra-high-voltage power line used to move large amounts of electricity over long distances. A Democratic gubernatorial challenger to Abbott, state Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D-Texas), said in a statement that the governor is not doing enough to protect the state from data center construction. “So nice to see another strongly worded letter from Abbott after he proudly made Texas the wild west of data centers.
