Our work explores a new approach to environmental management by investigating the probability of using the position of the redox interface in groundwater to predict catchment-scale denitrification. This research offers crucial insights into how we can better understand and manage nitrogen removal in hydrogeological systems. What's the #1 challenge with bioremediation in prairie soils? It's not that the microbes can't do the job. It's that they run out of steam too quickly. Fe(III) citrate helps for a while, then activity becomes patchy. The cleanup stalls. And we're left wondering why at some sites, sometimes biostimulants do not work. Here's what new research from the University of Saskatchewan found: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) might be the missing ingredient that changes everything. Across eight contaminated sites in Western Canada: → DOM alone: 2x faster benzene degradation → DOM + Fe(III) citrate: Nearly 3x faster → Consistent results: 7 out of 8 sites showed enhanced degradation We developed a method to visualize microbial activity at the scale where it occurs (sub-millimetre resolution) using [18F]fluorobenzene radiotracer imaging. That's right, antimatter probes to optimize remediation. Why is this important? Now, we can rapidly screen biostimulants before expensive field trials. We can identify which zones are active and which are stalled. We can target our amendments instead of treating everything uniformly. Translation: Less trial-and-error. Lower costs. Better results. It highlights the importance of multi-isotope approaches (δ¹⁵N–NO₃⁻, δ¹⁸O–NO₃⁻, δ¹¹B) for understanding contamination pathways and supporting sustainable groundwater management. Back in 2022, our cluster began investigating the underwater tire dump in Alver, outside Bergen, Norway. The dump has been there since the 1970s. Our aim was to assess the environmental risks posed by such a concentration of pollutants, in order to better understand the technological precautions needed when removing the dump. Supported by the Regional Research Fund, we analyzed the site in 2022–2023 and found high concentrations of various toxic chemicals and metals, especially in the sediments beneath the tires. Our recommendation was clear: the dump should be removed as soon as possible, but with great caution, using appropriate barriers to prevent secondary pollution. This conclusion was later supported by an environmental study conducted by Norconsult on behalf of the municipality of Alver. The findings from our analysis are now included in a scientific paper, in a study led by the excellent Dr. Farhan Khan at NORCE. Unfortunately, the tire dump remains in place.

Australian Citizen Science Conference #CitSciOz25 at Melbourne Connect where I presented on rainwater tank research in 3 NSW study areas: Cadia, Mendooran & Narrabri. Together with my PhD supervisor, Dr Ian Wright from the School of Science, Western Sydney University, we shared findings about contamination in roof harvested rainwater tanks in a hard rock metal mining area (Cadia), a coal and CSG area (Narrabri) and a third area Mendooran, which has no reportable industries according to the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI). The hard rock mining area has by far the worst rainwater tank quality, with the greatest number of samples exceeding Australian Drinking Water Guidelines by larger percentages. Neither the materials present in the roof collection systems and tanks, nor tank hygiene, can count for the high levels of pollution in Cadia tanks. The Mendooran tanks also warrant further study to identify potential pollution pathways of metals of metals of concern into rainwater tanks. Thanks to the Australian Citizen Science Association for including this presentation in #CitSciOz and the Cadia Community Sustainability Network (CCSN) citizen science initiative for making the work possible.
