The dialogue will bring together senior policymakers, climate leaders and practitioners to explore how circular economy solutions can support climate ambition ahead of COP31. The planet is pushing back — and it’s working. While climate headlines are often dominated by disaster, 2026 has quietly delivered some of the most significant environmental progress in years. Here are 4 wins worth paying attention to: 1. Renewables Are Outpacing Fossil Expansion For the first time, clean energy capacity additions are consistently outrunning new fossil fuel infrastructure globally. Solar and wind aren’t just growing — they’re winning on economics alone. 2. Methane Detection Is Now Operational From Space Satellites can now identify major methane leaks from oil and gas facilities in near real time. This changes the accountability game entirely — emitters can no longer hide behind invisibility. 3. Global Plastic Treaty Negotiations Are Gaining Momentum Nations are moving toward binding commitments on plastic production and disposal. The framework being built now could reshape how the world manufactures and manages plastic for decades. 4. Nature Restoration Is Scaling Beyond Pilot Projects Forests, wetlands, and degraded ecosystems are receiving serious investment — not just as carbon offsets, but as long-term infrastructure for climate resilience and biodiversity. Progress doesn’t always make the front page. But it’s happening — and tracking it matters. After much deliberation and work, the new Science Based Targets initiative Net Zero standard is out. While there is much to digest in the new standard and many details still needed, WWF is pleased to see many of the revisions. Our first look suggests companies will have many new options to set targets and opportunities for investments to meet them. More soon.

A new chapter for corporate climate action is here: the next generation of the Science Based Targets initiative Net-Zero Standard. 🌍 WWF welcomes the stronger SBTi Net-Zero Standard as an important step to speed up corporate climate action. Key improvements include: ✅ A clearer implementation hierarchy to help companies prioritise the most impactful emission reduction actions.  ✅ Expanded target-setting options, enabling businesses to tailor approaches to their operations and value chains - including using measures such as uptake of low emission steel or net-zero aligned products sold  ✅ Increased flexibility for value chain interventions, including the use of market instruments to help drive sectoral transformation, such as energy and commodity certificates.  ✅ Stronger recognition of contributions beyond the value chain, with companies encouraged to invest in wider climate and nature solutions, while maintaining a clear distinction between these additional contributions and their net zero targets.  ✅ Simplified processes, particularly for Scope 3 target-setting, reducing barriers to adoption. Kirsten Schuijt, WWF Director General, said: “The SBTi remains the gold standard for corporate climate target setting. The revised net zero standard marks a meaningful progression and has the potential to drive real impact across the global economy. Mia Hamm has 147. Linsday Heaps has 48. Messi is one pass away from the all-time World Cup record. Soccer counts assists. Climate claims aren't quite there yet.    We've built an entire legal and regulatory architecture around the goal: the net zero pledge, the 2030 target, the SBTi commitment. But we're just beginning to create the legal and accounting systems that recognize the assist. Voluntary action that doesn't, by itself, solve climate change, but meaningfully contributes to the conditions under which systemic change becomes possible.    Right now, companies trying to communicate honestly about that kind of contribution face a genuine catch-22. The EmpCo Directive, the FTC Green Guides, and the CMA's framework all impose rigorous (and important) standards. But those same standards can make it nearly impossible to speak honestly about where you actually are, and where the system is constraining your progress. Silence becomes the legally safe choice, and silence is the worst possible outcome.    EDF and Ria Sustainability/Oxford Net Zero will be exploring this problem, and discussing the evidence, language, and institutional architecture needed to solve it as part of a workshop at London Climate Week bringing together green claims lawyers, carbon accountants, sustainability directors, and NGO counsel to work through exactly these questions.    If you're navigating the space between honest climate ambition and legal exposure, we'd love to talk to you.

EDF, Oxford Net Zero and Ria Sustainability will host a roundtable at London Climate Action Week (#LCAW2026): “From Commitments to Claims: How Can We Talk About (Missing, Adjusting, and Meeting) Climate Targets?” 🎯 As companies move from target-setting to delivery, and uncertainty around meeting targets, what does credible communication look like? In a transition defined by trade-offs, evolving standards and diverse political landscape, how can we best advise companies on their communications about credible and critical climate action.  Transitioning to a net zero future requires more than individual company action — it demands system-level change, from clean energy to water stewardship to ecosystem protection. And one of the most powerful levers we have is collective demand signals, paired with honest communication about what progress really looks like. Next week Environmental Defense Fund, Oxford Net Zero and Ria Sustainability will convene companies, NGOs, legal experts, consultants, and civil society to tackle critical questions: 👉What guidance, evidence standard, or institutional infrastructures are needed to create the conditions for open, transparent, legally durable communication on climate progress?  👉 How can companies communicate about contributions towards individual targets and system level changes without fear of backlash or misinterpretation?   👉 Which options do we have to shift the focus of climate claims from internal emissions to participation in systemic decarbonization?  This is an opportunity to accelerate momentum on system change, draw from the expanding array of evidence and claims frameworks, and build shared understanding of credible climate leadership.  Holly Pearen, Jordan Faires, Kaya Axelsson and Lucy Erickson are proud to help convene this conversation. It's no secret that many companies are grappling with how to navigate impending climate target deadlines amidst a rapidly moving legal and standards landscape, political upheaval, and economic and technological headwinds on climate action. As 2030 nears, how can companies continue to credibly communicate their climate action and ambition - and continue the momentum for the net zero transition - even amidst these changes? Green claims have already been such a hot topic here in London for #LCAW, and I can't wait to dig into this more in our session tomorrow with Kaya Axelsson, Lucy Erickson, and Holly Pearen - alongside leaders from major consultancies, companies, NGOs, and law firms.
