To mark World Environment Day🌍on 5 June, VisitAberdeenshire has published its second annual sustainability report for 2025-26. The report outlines the work taking place across the organisation to support sustainable tourism in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Sustainable tourism at VisitAberdeenshire goes beyond internal actions or business guidance. It focuses on long term benefits for communities, the environment and the economy, while helping to create meaningful visitor experiences that support local livelihoods and strengthen places. This year’s report highlights several areas of activity, including education and school engagement, the Welcome to Aberdeenshire volunteer programme and initiatives that promote sustainable travel. It also highlights the support available to tourism businesses through the sustainable tourism toolkit and tourism development programme. By working closely with local businesses and communities, VisitAberdeenshire aims to help protect the region’s natural capital and ensure that Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire remain vibrant and welcoming for future generations. Long term success depends on investing in people, and collaboration across industry, education and communities continues to play an important role in shaping authentic and inclusive visitor experiences. 🌍 Sustainability is achievable for every tourism business – regardless of its size. The successful completion of the I-STARS project marks another important milestone for the #CCCI in delivering EU-funded projects with tangible benefits for the business community. Through initiatives like I-STARS, CCCI continues to help Cypriot enterprises become more competitive, resilient and sustainable. As coordinator of this EU co-funded project, CCCI worked together with partners from Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain to support island tourism SMEs in adopting greener and more sustainable business practices through expert mentoring, training and direct financial support. The impact of I-STARS across Europe: ✅ 123 tourism SMEs received financial support. ✅ €684,749 was invested in sustainability actions. ✅ SMEs implemented numerous sustainability improvements, including internationally recognised sustainability certifications, energy and water efficiency measures, renewable energy installations, waste reduction initiatives, accessibility improvements, digitalisation actions, sustainable mobility solutions and biodiversity protection measures. The impact in Cyprus: ✔️ 25 tourism SMEs received grants totalling €138,878, enabling them to implement practical sustainability investments that are already delivering environmental, social and economic benefits. 📖 Explore the results! As sustainability expectations continue to evolve in Europe, understanding regulatory frameworks like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is becoming essential for organisations across the tourism sector and beyond. This short overview has been created as an educational resource for the Greenmatters environmental sustainability community, breaking down key concepts such as CSRD, ESRS, and what recent reporting requirement changes mean for operators, corporations in and outside Europe, and SMEs. We look forward to learning, sharing insights, and contributing to transparency in sustainable tourism with the Greenmatters community and encourage community members to share their own experiences with sustainability data collection and reporting. I was chatting with a woman here in the Algarve about sustainability and mentioned that I've developed tools specifically for regenerative tourism — because I've seen firsthand how much harm it can cause where I grew up. She nodded and opened up immediately. "There's a place we call Secret Beach," she said. "You can only get there by water at low tide — you have to go under an arch, into a beautiful cave. Like the ones in the brochures." She was swimming there one afternoon, listening to the birds and the waves on the freshly exposed shore. A tour boat came in. Music blasting. Full of people dancing. And the boat hit her. On purpose. The operators told her to leave — nudging her away with the hull while she was swimming. It wasn't the first time. Other boats have bumped her kayak before. "They only care about the tips," she said. "They don't care about the local people. They don't care about the Nature. And we don't even know what that loud music does to the caves." I could hear the hurt in her voice. As a sailor, I was horrified at the safety risk. As someone who watched a home become overcrowded with tourists and the environment degrade — I felt her pain deeply. We batted away tears, as if we suddenly remembered we were in public. This is what extractive tourism looks like. Not in theory. On a regular afternoon in a cave that someone has swum in their whole life. There is another way. And it starts with asking different questions — about place, about community, about what we're taking and what we could be giving instead. That's what Leading Regenerative Tourism is about. I'm hosting a workshop next Tuesday, 7 July for tourism operators who want to be part of the community, providing economic and ecological benefits. Link in comments.

Recently, I met with Sophie Boladeras at the University of Auckland to discuss my recent publication, Mapping Sustainable Transitions in Tourism, in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management (JHTM) When she asked, "What does sustainable tourism, or the end goal, look like?" My response was “There’s no end state. We thought carbon neutral was it, then carbon zero, then regenerative, and now nature positive [tourism]. There’s probably already something out there for what comes next.” Continually raising the bar drives progress, but also makes sustainability harder to operationalise. How can organisations reach a goal when the post keeps moving? Our research suggests that firms move through recurring cycles of change - moving backwards and forwards - in pursuit of their sustainability goals. For example, a firm may begin focusing on reducing its carbon footprint. Over time, they may become carbon-neutral and then shift towards carbon-zero, regenerative, or nature-positive outcomes. As their experience with and understanding of sustainability evolves, so will the sustainability goals the firm pursues. Organisations continually redefine what "better" or "more sustainable" looks like, beginning the transition process again and again. In today's UN Environment Programme Global Roundtable on Climate Action in Tourism Climate Resilient Destinations: Circularity as Climate Action Confirmation, Paul Dickinson said something that really hit home: "Sustainability is the name we give to problems that governments can't fix." And, to a degree, he's right. Governments can help people try to solve these problems, but they cannot fix them. Sustainability issues are collective action problems, meaning that we need mass involvement to even entertain the idea that we may be making meaningful progress toward solving them. On this #worldenvironmentday, countless leaders came together to address the elephant in the room: the tourism industry needs to start acting collectively to truly begin solving the problems it's facing, rather than blaming it all on travelers themselves. I raise you #sdg17, Partnerships for the Goals. Collective action happens, well, collectively.
